Mature Students

The opportunities to gain work experience were fantastic and something I embraced. I was involved with Festival Republic at Latitude Festival, and even did some Dj-ing at Leeds Festival. I also co-created and performed a show at Sibiu International Student Theatre Festival in Romania, and undertook a work placement at a theatre school in Bilbao.

We are dedicated to producing versatile practitioners - you will gain experience across a range of disciplines, developing valuable transferable skills. As a graduate you will be able to apply for work across a huge range of arts and cultural industries, from theatre and live arts to festival management, curation, club work and teaching. You will also be capable of originating and running your own projects.

You will be engaged in practical events in the city in theatres, galleries and more unusual sites. You will also have the opportunity to work creatively at festivals such as Latitude or Leeds Festival in collaboration with Festival Republic.

We showcase student work internationally and have exchange agreements and partnerships with a range of international festivals and universities. Previous student performances have been taken to the 'Graduates' Festival in London, Dionysus Festival in Croatia and Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Romania.

    I have the privilege to support and direct young artists in their learning, and prepare them to be confident in their creative futures.

  • Gillian has developed a body of solo work exploring 'sense of place'. Her international exhibitions have focused on site, process and seeing, including an artist in residence with HIAP Helsinki in 2002. Her work 'Site Unseen' was commissioned and performed at the acclaimed National Review of Live Art in 2010. Gillian is also an experienced British scuba diver, and has explored the undersea world from Bridlington to the Barrier Reef!

An amazing place to spend your days

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
