Train to be a primary school teacher with an additional specialism in physical education and enjoy a rewarding career, teaching children aged between five and 11 years. This course will provide training in all primary stage national curriculum subjects, with a particular focus on the subjects of English, mathematics, science and PE.
You will explore established educational theories alongside new ideas, concepts and developments in the field of education. In addition, we will develop you as a future leader in the teaching of PE, giving you the knowledge and skills to promote, shape and develop the subject within a primary school setting.
A range of practical teaching experiences designed to enhance your professional development will complement rigorous academic study on campus. You will be supported on campus by expert tutors who will help to refine your subject knowledge and teaching practice. During your work in schools, you will be guided by mentors and experienced teachers as you put your learning into practice and really begin to hone your teaching skills.
In 2017, we became one of only 25 universities to have their initial teacher training allocations confirmed for the next three years, an acknowledgement by the Department for Education of their excellent provision.
You can choose from two different training models.
University-led: You will develop your theoretical knowledge at our Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Your learning will be informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.
School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

Helping you to develop your confidence, identity and style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will form a fundamental element of your training.
To help with your preparations for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend an outdoor experience during induction, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to develop your support networks and discover how the outdoors can be used to inspire physical education and your teaching.
Regardless of which training model you follow, you will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools involved in the delivery of your course are located in and around Leeds to ensure your travelling is limited and you will have the maximum time to prepare your lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting schools, receiving support from your school mentor and University tutors.
You will learn from lecturers who have been practising teachers and are now active in educational research, benefiting from their practical experience and theoretical knowledge.
We provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, providing you with another valuable element of support and coaching as you start your teaching career.

To study this course, you will require broadband internet connection with a speed of 2mbps and working speakers. You will need Windows 7 / Mac OSX 10.8 or above and have access to Chrome v63 or higher (recommended), Edge v42+, Firefox v57+ or Safari v6+. Java and Adobe Acrobat Reader will need to be enabled and you will need a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 honours degree, or a 2:2 honours degree plus evidence of wider experience in a UK school or foundation setting relevant to Primary/Early Years education.
GCSEs:All applicants must have grade C passes in GCSE English Language, Maths and a Science (or equivalent) before making their application. Key Skills, Functional Skills and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are not accepted in place of GCSEs.
Due to the popularity of this course, we will use selection criteria based on your personal attributes, experience and/or commitment to the area of study using information derived from your personal statement and reference. These will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements, and only if you are successful at this stage will you be invited to interview.
Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview as part of the admissions process. The interview process has two main purposes:
- To establish whether you have the attributes that will enable you to cope with both the professional demands of the course and the related academic work;
- To give you the opportunity to explain what attracts you to teaching as a career and why you think you are a suitable candidate. The interview will involve a group activity and an individual interview. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the course.

ENHANCED CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS:
Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.
You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.
Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good ConductThe DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. For some countries, an individual can only apply in person and so it is preferable for those applicants still resident in the relevant country, to apply before entering the UK.
For certain Professional Body courses, Occupational Health checks are also part of the entry requirements. Applicants will be asked to complete an on-line Health Questionnaire and sent guidance and links on how to complete this following your offer of a place.
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ policy. All applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, for example we accept some Functional Skills Tests.

Fees & funding
The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2020/21 is £9250. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.
Additional course costs
Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations. The following is also included in the cost of your course:

In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (the library stocks books from your module reading list and can order books from other locations for you if a copy isn’t available but you may wish to purchase copies for yourself); placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you will need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
You may prefer to have your own mobile phone/tablet (to access university online services) but you can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: such as 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in social learning spaces and in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located on the ground floor of the libraries.
