Overview

We are an established sports education provider with a rich sporting pedigree. Your skills and knowledge will be nurtured in a supportive learning community with vast experience of training the next generation of PE teachers. Your network of support will include our research staff and course tutors, who will be on hand to sharpen your teaching expertise and knowledge of the subject, ensuring it is informed by the latest research and practices.

You will have access to our wide range of first-class sporting facilities - used by international athletes and Olympic medal winners - to help you in the practical application of your theoretical learning. These include 3G pitches, indoor and floodlit outdoor tennis courts, an athletics track, a swimming pool and gyms packed with the latest fitness equipment.

We will develop your communication skills so that you can confidently manage a large group of pupils. For example, you will understand the importance of varying your tone of voice during group activities, learn how to use equipment such as whistles appropriately and how to address and maintain the attention of your pupils when teaching PE.

We will also give you the skills to confidently manage classes with wide differences in ability. You will be able to devise lessons that develop from personalised activities to games that involve and stimulate your entire class.

Due to the nature of PE, you will not always be able to run your classes outdoors. We will also develop your organisational skills so that you will be able to plan your lessons and teach effectively regardless of the weather.

Your training will also develop your understanding of how PE can be used to motivate and strengthen learning in your pupils beyond the physical benefits of sport.

You can choose from two different training models.

University-led: You will develop your theoretical knowledge at our Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Your learning will be informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff. We will organise your extensive school placements so you can apply your knowledge in a classroom setting and your placements will be timetabled to fit with your taught seminars on campus.

School Direct: For the vast majority of your course, you will be based in your provider school or schools, learning on the job while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors. You will attend our Headingley Campus one day a week (usually a Friday) for key module seminars.

We have more than 100 years' experience of training teachers and you'll be guided by a course team ready to develop your potential as a teacher. You will become part of a supportive teaching community, learning from fellow students and sharing ideas on lesson plans, classroom experiences and teaching tips.

Helping you to develop your confidence, identity and teaching style through a critically reflective approach to your practice will be a vital element of your course.

To prepare you for your course, you will have the opportunity to attend a residential, where you will meet your tutors and fellow trainees, start to foster your support networks and discover how the outdoors can be used to inspire your teaching.

You will gain substantial training in a school environment. Many of the partnership schools are located in and around Leeds so your travelling will be limited and you will have more time to prepare your lessons. You will complete three teaching placements in at least two contrasting schools, receiving support from your school mentor and University tutors.

You will learn from lecturers who have been practising teachers and are now active in educational research, benefiting from their real-life experience and theoretical knowledge.

We will provide ongoing training for all newly qualified teachers. On successful completion of your course, you will be able to enrol on our Newly Qualified Teacher module, designed to support your progress and development as you start your teaching career.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have at least a lower second-class honours degree relevant to secondary education in or related to the subject area the candidate is applying for.

GCSES:
All applicants must have grade C passes in GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) before making their application. Key Skills, Functional Skills and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are not accepted in place of GCSEs.
Practical Experience
We usually require evidence of experience working with children of different ages within the 11-16 age-range. Preferably this would be across KS3 and KS4 in a UK Secondary School / setting and would equate to about 10 – 15 days in total.  In addition, we value experience of working with children in contexts other than school and will take these into consideration. It is preferable that one of the two Referees on your UTT form is from a school-based setting which confirms the time you have spent in the classroom and comments on the contribution you have made; or, which comments on your experience of working with children in contexts other than the primary classroom. This is to gauge candidates' suitability to teach.
Professional Skills Tests:
The PGCE Secondary Education (11-16) entry requirements also include statutory Government requirements for trainees entering ITE. These are Professional Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy that must be passed before commencing a QTS course. Further information about registering for and completing these tests can be found on the Department for Education website. You should look to complete both tests as soon as you have submitted your application. We encourage you to use the practice material available on the DfE website to help you decide whether you are ready to book a live test or whether you should undertake further preparation prior to taking the test. For trainees recruited before 31st May in the year of entry, these Skills Tests must normally be successfully completed within 12 weeks of accepting the offer of a place on the course other than for late applicants. These applicants accepting an offer of a place after June 1st must have passed these tests prior to the commencement of the course.
Selection Criteria:
Due to the popularity of this course, we will use selection criteria based on your personal attributes, experience and/or commitment to the area of study using information derived from your personal statement and reference. These will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements, and only if you are successful at this stage will you be invited to interview.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.

INTERVIEW REQUIRED:

Suitable applicants will be invited to an interview as part of the admissions process. The interview will involve a group activity, an individual interview, and a written task which is designed to demonstrate your ability for critical thought. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the course.

IELTS:

IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

ENHANCED CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS:

Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check process click here.

SELF DECLARATION:

You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. For details on filtering, please click here. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.

Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct

The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. For some countries, an individual can only apply in person and so it is preferable for those applicants still resident in the relevant country, to apply before entering the UK.

HEALTH CHECKS:

For certain Professional Body courses, Occupational Health checks are also part of the entry requirements. Applicants will be asked to complete an on-line Health Questionnaire and sent guidance and links on how to complete this following your offer of a place.

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. We regularly review our courses to ensure we are offering you the best educational experience. Develop and enhance both your subject knowledge and your subject pedagogical knowledge.

Apply theoretical knowledge to an educational setting and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning in relation to children. You will be required to negotiate, manage and present personal learning outcomes.

Analyse the role of the professional teacher in the context of changing policies and priorities within education, identifying teaching and learning strategies that can be used to ensure the learning and wellbeing of those in education.

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2019/20 is £9250. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.
