Overview
Research Excellence Framework 2014
Research Excellence Framework 2014: 20% of our research in the Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care unit is world leading or internationally excellent.
Accredited by:
We offer the highly-regarded Institute of Acoustics (IoA) Diploma and the opportunity on successful completion to progress to a masters award by studying two research modules. Taught through lectures, laboratory classes and via our Virtual Learning Environment, emphasis will be given to studying the theory of acoustics and how this knowledge can be applied to develop practical solutions to noise problems.
Both courses are part-time with attendance on campus limited to half a day per week. The IoA Diploma will enable you to work as an acoustics specialist and it can enhance existing careers in construction, architecture or music technology. Undertaking the MSc will ensure your professional practice is informed by the very latest research, and your qualification will be well regarded both here and abroad.
We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.
Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

Careers
IoA Diploma Acoustics and Noise Control
Studying my course was a turning point in my career - it led me to set up my own company, which has been a dream of mine for the last ten years. I gained a really rounded knowledge from both the practical laboratory sessions and my tutors, which has given me lots of business potential.
Teaching and learning
- General Principles of Acoustics
Covering a wide range of acoustic topics, including how sound behaves, how it is measured and the ways we can investigate and control noise problems.
- Laboratory & Experimental Methods
A laboratory based module based around a wide range of practical investigations which are chosen to support and develop the ideas introduced in the General Principles module.
- Project - Individual Investigation of a Noise Problem
Starting the planning stages during the first semester, students have until the following October to carry out and report on an individual investigation of a noise problem.
- Regulation & Assessment of Environmental Noise
At the end of this module you will be able to identify and interpret the relevant EU/UK legislative drivers and codes of practice for noise and vibration, apply the EIA process in the context of noise assessment, use standard prediction methods, including noise prediction and mapping tools, for environmental noise assessment, and apply methods and regulations relating to the exposure to noise and vibration in the workplace.
- Building Acoustics
Gain expertise in factors governing the acoustic characteristics of enclosed spaces, and how these characteristics are described, predicted, measured and adjusted by design, physical principles governing the sound insulation provided by building structures, how sound insulation is characterised, measured and adjusted by design, and principles of electroacoustic system design for buildings.
- Environmental Noise - Prediction, Measurement & Control
Understand, select and use environmental noise indices/indicators, criteria and assessment procedures, use a systematic approach to the assessment of environmental noise and its impact, and select and design methods of environmental noise control.
