Overview

Building surveyors are involved in the design and construction of new buildings as well as the repair, refurbishment and management of existing structures.

This course will equip you with the skills you will need in design, law, management and technology to become a chartered surveyor. It will enable you to look at a building and see potential, create plans and consider practical aspects of its use.

Our students gain hands-on experience during site visits to modern developments and historic projects while studying for a degree that is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduates are eligible for full membership of the RICS following an acceptable period of approved professional practice and a successful final assessment of professional competence by the RICS.

You will develop excellent collaborative working skills, study software applications and modelling tools, and learn about how the different aspects of the built environment work together.

We have strong relationships with companies in the region and you will be taught not only by building surveyors but visiting planners, architects, researchers and civil and structural engineers will also deliver guest lectures and share up-to-date experience of their work in the field.

If you are studying full-time we encourage you to undertake a placement year in industry to provide invaluable work experience. We also encourage you to become a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Access to HE Diploma:
Pass overall with a minimum of 112 UCAS tariff points.
Scottish Awards:
Minimum of 5 subjects at Grade B at Higher Level.
Irish Leaving Certificate:
Minimum of 5 subjects at Grade C1 or above at Higher Level of which at least 3 must be at B2.
Level 5 or 6 Entry:
Applicants should have a HND, Foundation degree or equivalent award in the cognate subject of Building Surveying, the point of entry will be determined by the course team in line with the Professional Body requirements. Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

We regularly review our courses to ensure we are offering you the best educational experience. This course is currently being reviewed for 2019 entry, therefore the information below is correct for students joining us in 2018/19 but there may be changes for students who wish to join us in 2019/20. The full confirmed details of the course as it will be offered for 2019/20 will be published from August 2018. Check this page from that point for details of the course you can expect to study.

As the role of a building surveyor is wide and varied, the modules on this course have been tailored to provide you with as much experience of the industry as possible. Through practical sessions, tutorials and lectures, you will develop your identity as a building surveyor while working closely with students from other construction courses to gain a greater understanding of the industry as a whole. All modules on the course are core. The tabs below detail what and how you will study in each year of your course. The balance of assessments and overall workload is indicative and may be subject to change.

Your first year modules will provide you the thinking and approaches you will need to succeed throughout the course. You will gain a base knowledge of the areas associated with the industry, develop the basic skills required within the profession and work alongside other students to use surveying equipment.

Core Modules

Develop your knowledge and understanding of the economic and financial influences on commercial management, control and decision making.

You will learn how buildings are put together, and what the basic principles of construction, function and performance really are.

Using real-life situations to develop practical skills and achieve a sense of success - you learn how to do levelling, measure and draw up buildings and land, pricing quantities of material and labour.

This module introduces you to the essential legal aspects used by professionals in the built environment and is used as a foundation for modules in the following years.

Develop an understanding of materials used in the construction industry, their properties and how they are used within the industry.

An introduction to building physics and the building services systems found within dwellings, with a particular emphasis on low carbon buildings.

Expand your knowledge and build your professional attitude during the second year of your course. You will be expected to address situations where problems arise to produce in-depth answers and explanations as to how these issues come about. You will have the opportunity to prepare for your placement year by continuing to work alongside other construction students in groups that reflect the professional environment.

Core Modules

Working to a brief for a site in Leeds, you will explore the relationships between the property market and financial viability, and planning legislation and urban design.

Build your understanding of the principles, techniques and processes involved in the design and construction of non-domestic buildings.

What exactly do building surveyors get involved with? This module enables you to carry out practical exercises typical of a building surveyor's professional work. It includes guest lecturers from industry and the opportunity to survey a listed building.

As a building surveyor you will have to work with many other construction professionals - this module introduces you to them and will help influence the way in which you form professional relationships.

Building surveyors are often the key figure in keeping the right balance between client and contractor. You will learn the intimate workings of contracts to help facilitate this.

This is one of the main areas associated building surveying. It is described as the systematic treatment of building defects, their causes, their consequences and remedies.

Designed for part-time students who are employed in a related field, you will work individually collating and reflecting on evidence from your workplace. You will reflect on your experience and performance, identifying areas for improvement.

Prepare for graduation by enhancing your professional approach and employability skills. Using the enhance knowledge of industry gained during your placement, you will again work with students of different professional backgrounds to provide a solution to the real needs of a large employer, while formulating a bid for the purchase of a site from which to deliver your project.

Core Modules

Learn to ensure all the different buildings and services of a company work as efficiently as possible. This is an area which combines a broad field of specialisms and can form a major part of a building surveyor's work.

Gain an understanding of the principles, techniques and processes involved in the adaptation, refurbishment and retrofit of existing buildings, including the conservation of historic buildings. You will examine the principles, techniques and challenges involved in refurbishing existing buildings to meet statutory, energy, economic and functional requirements.

You will not be working alone, but are likely to be an important member of a team, possibly of different professions. This problem-based module enables you to play to your own strengths and interests as your team find conceptual and detailed solutions.

An opportunity to apply the knowledge you have gained by taking on a challenging brief to produce an environmentally sound, functional design that also addresses the issue of human behaviour in the event of a fire.

This is your opportunity to research in detail a problem close to your heart and produce a piece of written work that may be worthy of publication.

Part-time students will study this module in lieu of Inter-Professional Studies. You will reflect on your performance in the workplace and prepare and present a case study as an oral presentation and written submission.

Mark worked in the construction industry for more than 20 years and is still involved with small projects involving budgets of between £50,000 and £250,000. His experience extends from working on new build leisure projects to refurbishment works on listed buildings such as Leeds Town Hall. Mark is currently studying for a PhD which focuses on suspended ceilings in theatres, an issue which has become more significant since the collapse of the Apollo Theatre ceiling in December 2013.

Fees & funding

Fees for this course are not yet confirmed. You will normally spend a whole year in placement. For this year you will be given a full tuition fee waiver. See further information on financing your studies or information about whether you may qualify for one of our Bursaries and Scholarships.

Educational visits - The cost for these trips covers travel, accommodation and subsistence. The price varies year by year and attendance is optional.

Study materials - We provide core materials during your studies and you may choose to purchase additional materials. This is not compulsory and will depend upon the projects you undertake.

Tuition fees
Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations.
The following are also included in the cost of your course:

  • 24/7 Library and student IT support
  • Free wifi via eduroam
  • Skills workshops and resources
  • Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
  • Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC, laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app

Home to our first-rate sporting facilities – Headingley Campus has a rich and diverse history having played to visitors such as Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde. Set in 100 acres of parkland, with easy access to Leeds city centre, many of our buildings look out onto our grassy acre – a perfect place for hanging out, playing games and catching up with friends on long summer days. Headingley Campus has modern sport science laboratories, animation and music studios and the latest computing labs, as well as one of our libraries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
