Overview

Gain valuable insights into business planning and forecasting together with proficiency in the field of business management. Your course will develop your broader business knowledge along with expert skills in analytics and you will put theory into practice by taking part in a live business consultancy project working with companies, charities or not-for-profit organisations, boosting your employability and career options when you graduate.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

You can choose to take a paid work placement in the third year to develop the experience and skills employers are looking for and to begin developing your professional network. Our dedicated employability and placements office has found previous students placements at companies ranging from SMEs to international organisations including Virgin, BMW and Apple. They can also help with advice and guidance on CV and letter writing, interview techniques, assessment centres and psychometric tests.

Put your knowledge into practice through in-class case study work, internships or volunteering. You can also experience international business first hand through our study abroad option. Previous students have studied at universities in Spain, the USA and New Zealand, among many others.

The guest lecture programme at Leeds Business School has given previous students the opportunity to hear from and meet with a wide range of representatives from professional bodies and financial organisations first hand. Past speakers have included the Chief Economist of Yorkshire Bank and the CEO of the London Stock Exchange.

Students will be taught by our team who bring together professional qualifications, industry experience from across the globe and a wide network of business connections.

Understand the essential economic tools and theories that enable business students to begin to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. Understand the essential economic tools and theories that enable business students to begin to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. The module will promote an understanding of the operation of key global markets and consider important worldwide macro-economic issues.

Learn to use statistical methods to describe, present and identify the salient features of business data in order to develop your ability to make sound commercial decisions.

Learn about the people side of business. This module is structured into four main themes: motivation, management, leadership and teams. You will look at these within the context of culture, political environment, global working and intercultural competence.

Explore the challenges business managers face in a globalised competitive environment. This module will enable you to experience the daily challenges of running a business first-hand through the use of business simulation software. You will understand the differences between public, private and third sector companies and the functions and departments of a business, as well as developing your problem-solving abilities.

Applied Management Practice

Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You will use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.

Explore in-depth approaches used in economic planning and forecasting.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.

Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

Additional costs
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

  • You will need to purchase a scientific calculator (approximately £10) for your second year of study

Course-specific optional costs

  • Chartered Management Institute Level 5 Certificate of Consultancy (if you choose to take this additional qualification it will cost £200).

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (the library stocks books from your module reading list and can order books from other locations for you if a copy isn’t available but you may wish to purchase copies for yourself); placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you will need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

You may prefer to have your own mobile phone/tablet (to access university online services) but you can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: such as 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in social learning spaces and in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located on the ground floor of the libraries.

This list is not exhaustive and costs will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees.

    You will use Critical Decision Immersive Simulations in this facility to develop effective leadership and group participant skills. The simulations replicate the complexities of real life scenarios that would challenge decision makers, aiming to improve your decision making, critical thinking and communication skills.

    Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire. Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
