Overview

Learn how to manage dynamic and complex organisations. Gain an expert understanding of how businesses operate and develop the skills needed to become a strategic and successful manager. You will apply your business-theory knowledge in a client-facing consultancy project and you will gain the practical experience needed to impress potential employers. You will develop your understanding of business and management issues at both a national level and a global level and across a wide array of industries and sectors.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

You can opt to take a paid work placement in the third year of your course to develop and enhance your transferable employability skills. Our students have taken a paid placement year with top companies such as Disney, Warner Brothers, L'Oreal, Unilever, Marks and Spencer, VW and KPMG. Posts with these employers have included business analyst, project manager and account manager. We have a dedicated employability and placements office to support you and provide you with access to a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement guidance and seminars are available on topics such as CV and letter writing, how to succeed at interview, assessment centres and psychometric tests.

You will be presented with opportunities to put your knowledge into practice, whether through in-class case study work, internships, study abroad or volunteering. Entrepreneurial skills are encouraged and developed through active participation in a range of national student competitions such as the IBM University Business Challenge.

Examine how managers can understand and use different financial information. You will consider how shareholders can use financial statements as a means of evaluating a firm?s performance.

Learn about the people side of business. This module is structured into four main themes: motivation, management, leadership and teams. You will look at these within the context of culture, political environment, global working and intercultural competence.

Learn to use statistical methods to describe, present and identify the salient features of business data in order to develop your ability to make sound commercial decisions.

Understand the essential economic tools and theories that enable business students to begin to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. The module will promote an understanding of the operation of key global markets and consider important worldwide macro-economic issues.

Become familiar with key marketing principles and appreciate how contemporary marketing concepts are used by organisations. You will gain an insight into marketing challenges and the consequences for organisations that fail to become customer-orientated.

Explore the challenges business managers face in a globalised competitive environment. This module will enable you to experience the daily challenges of running a business first-hand through the use of business simulation software. You will understand the differences between public, private and third sector companies and the functions and departments of a business, as well as developing your problem-solving abilities.

Your six modules will enable you to add problem solving to your skill set. Your studies will focus on "micro" business concepts and the module Managerial Decision Making will improve your ability to make effective decisions.

Explore the leadership skills and competencies required for managers in a global environment. This module focuses on managerial employability and aims to equip you with skills relating to job search, application and selection, as well as an understanding of your individual ‘personal brand’.

Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You will use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.

Examine and evaluate the role of marketing within an entrepreneurial setting and its contribution to the achievement of business goals together with the development and implementation of entrepreneurial marketing actions.

This module will enable you to experience the daily challenges of running a business first-hand through the use of business simulation software. Understand the structure of business finance and its application to the decision-making processes in organisations.

Explore the leadership skills and competencies required for managers in a global environment. This module focuses on managerial employability and aims to equip you with skills relating to job search, application and selection, as well as an understanding of your individual ‘personal brand’.

Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You will use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.

Examine and evaluate the role of marketing within an entrepreneurial setting and its contribution to the achievement of business goals together with the development and implementation of entrepreneurial marketing actions.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.

Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Apply your learning to a strategic organisational issue of your choice. Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value.
