Overview

What makes a person choose an iPhone or Android smartphone, and what makes Coca-Cola dominate the soft drinks industry? Develop the marketing expertise to make strategic business decisions, manage digital campaigns and understand buyer behaviour. You will gain specific knowledge of marketing ethics, corporate social responsibility and of the ethical and cultural differences between national markets, maximising your employability both in the UK and overseas. This course will give you the acumen for business management so you can oversee finance, economics, accounting and people - you'll also gain the marketing expertise to make strategic decisions, manage digital campaigns, and understand thought processes behind every consumer purchase.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

This course takes you beyond the classroom, giving you the chance to gain real-life business and marketing expertise through hands-on work in simulations, workshops and networking evenings.

You'll test your marketing skills against simulated challenges in our brand new Hydra suite, for example, what would you do if a rival company launches a cheaper product to compete with yours, or the demand for your product shrinks in one part of the world? If you relish the challenges of Wall Street, you'll have access to our Bloomberg terminal, where you can carry out online stock trading.

Our Guest Lecture Series allow you to glean the secrets of business leaders' successes - past visitors have included the president of the Academy of Marketing, the chief executive of Yorkshire Bank and the editor of Cosmopolitan.

Our Study Abroad team can also arrange for you to study in America, Europe or New Zealand, giving you a truly global insight to business practices abroad.

Our expert teaching staff come highly-acclaimed by our students. Several of our lecturers have experience in business research, published books and journals, while all of them have years of professional experience, with close working links with the business community.

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Teaching and learning

This course will enable you to develop a deep knowledge of business, including skills in strategy and operations. Your marketing modules will see you develop an expert skill set. The tabs below detail what and how you will study in each year of your course. The balance of assessments and overall workload is indicative and may be subject to change.
Six core modules will encourage you to start building your business skill set. The Business in Action module will enable you to start honing the skills and knowledge you will need to establish and run a business.

Core Modules

Learn to use statistical methods to describe, present and identify the salient features of business data in order to develop your ability to make sound commercial decisions.

Understand the essential economic tools and theories that enable business students to begin to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. The module will promote an understanding of the operation of key global markets and consider important worldwide macro-economic issues.

Examine how managers can understand and use different financial information. You will consider how shareholders can use financial statements as a means of evaluating a firm?s performance.

Become familiar with key marketing principles and appreciate how contemporary marketing concepts are used by organisations. You will gain an insight into marketing challenges and the consequences for organisations that fail to become customer-orientated.

Learn about the people side of business. This module is structured into four main themes: motivation, management, leadership and teams. You will look at these within the context of culture, political environment, global working and intercultural competence.

Explore the challenges business managers face in a globalised competitive environment. This module will enable you to experience the daily challenges of running a business first-hand through the use of business simulation software. You will understand the differences between public, private and third sector companies and the functions and departments of a business, as well as developing your problem-solving abilities.

You will study six core modules, including two specialist marketing modules that will enable you to start refining your business knowledge.

Understand the structure of business finance and its application to the decision-making processes in organisations.

Learn to apply the broad concepts, principles and theories of marketing to the marketing planning process i.e. the creation of a product or service for a defined target market.

Explore the leadership skills you will need to operate as a manager in a global environment. You will study topics such as strategic leadership skills, cultural awareness, cultural perception, culture shock, cultural learning, intercultural team-working and communication.

Understand the nature of managerial decision making and its complexities including the tensions between ethics and cost effectiveness. You will explore the role of cognition, perception and motivation in decision making as well as the negotiation skills essential in effective decision making.

Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You will use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.

Gain an understanding of the marketing research process and further develop knowledge and skills in planning and implementing marketing research projects.

If you choose to study the Governance, Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility module, you will explore the importance of ethical business decision-making, how the governance of firms should be organised and the consideration of stakeholders in developing approaches to the social responsibility of businesses. Alternatively, choose to apply for a work placement and start to develop your experience of the workplace.

Gain a critical understanding of organisations as a whole. You will develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to critically contribute to the strategies of any organisation by working with complex real-life business problems.

Strategic HRM for Leaders

Understand branding, consumer relationships with brands and the brand management process in a dynamic, highly competitive and global operating environment.

If you choose the Consultancy Project module, you will apply your learning to a strategic organisational issue of your choice. You will develop and manage a client-consultant relationship, and work in a group supported by a member of staff deliver outcomes for the client using the relevant academic knowledge, skills and critical thinking. Alternatively, you could choose the Business Start-Up Incubator which will see you undertake the creation and management of a new business, either individually or as part of a team. This module will be delivered in collaboration with professional mentors, and investors and will add real-life value to your CV.

This module will cover areas such as the role marketing strategy plays within corporate strategy, how to develop sustainable marketing plans and the marketing planning framework.

Nehal has worked in a breadth of industry roles, and so can offer his students a wealth of professional industrial experience combined with his academic expertise. Nehal is currently course leader for the BA (Hons) Business & Management degree but also teaches at postgraduate level. He is an award-winning member of staff, having been nominated by his own students to receive awards including Motivator of the Year and Personal Tutor of the Year.
I am passionate about opening up opportunities for our students. I want to make sure every student gets what they signed up for but, further to that, that they expand their knowledge and leave us with the skills and expertise they need to succeed in whatever they choose to pursue.

Fees & funding

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2018/19 is £9250. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.

Tuition fees
Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations.

The following are also included in the cost of your course:

  • 24/7 Library and student IT support
  • Free wifi via eduroam
  • Skills workshops and resources
  • Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
  • Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC, laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app
  • Loan of high-end media equipment to support your studies

Course specific

  • Access to the Hydra Suite, an on-campus system that will help you to develop effective leadership and group participant skills. We are the only business school in the world with this facility.
  • Access to the media suite featuring TV and radio studios, a control gallery, a newsroom and an editing suite to help you develop your professional-level technical knowledge and skills.

Other study-related expenses to consider: books (the library stocks books from your module reading list but you may wish to purchase copies for yourself); placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery; field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations); PC/laptop (provided on campus in social learning spaces and in the library. It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
