Overview

Cultivate your business expertise and equip yourself with the practical skills employers are seeking. You will develop a rounded business skill set and you will learn about key business functions. Option modules will then enable you to refine your expertise in a number of these key areas to match your interests and career aspirations. Taking up the option of a placement year will give you valuable professional experience of industry and a head start in the competitive world of business.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

You will be strongly encouraged to take up a placement year. Previous students have taken advantage of placements with employers such as Redmayne-Bentley, De Puy and Morrisons. We have a dedicated employability and placements office to support you and provide you with access to a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement guidance and seminars are available on topics such as CV and letter writing, how to succeed at interview, assessment centres and psychometric tests.

You can also take part in business competitions such as the Aviva Challenge and the IBM Universities Business Challenge, a national business simulation game in competition against other universities. The opportunity to study abroad in countries such as the USA, Australia or the Netherlands is also available. The module will promote an understanding of the operation of key global markets and consider important worldwide macro-economic issues.

Examine how managers can understand and use different financial information. You will consider how shareholders can use financial statements as a means of evaluating a firm?s performance.

Work as part of a group to plan a new entrepreneurial venture. You will analyse other entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ventures by discussing cases and listening to video presentations, such as TED Talks. Within your group, you will evaluate the viability of a business concept, focusing particularly on using primary and/or secondary research your group has conducted regarding market demand. The supervision process during tutorials will provide feedback on the groups? business idea and planning.

You will analyse other entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ventures by discussing cases and listening to video presentations, such as TED Talks. The supervision process during tutorials will provide feedback on the groups? business idea and planning.

Understand the essential economic tools and theories that enable business students to begin to identify the economic dimensions of the human condition in a business environment. Examine how managers can understand and use different financial information. You will consider how shareholders can use financial statements as a means of evaluating a firm?s performance.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
