Overview

Build the foundations for a diverse and interesting future in civil engineering. This integrated masters course provides the ideal platform to gain a broad-based technical experience, enabling you to enter design, construction or operations roles within the civil engineering industry.

You will develop knowledge of the mathematical and scientific principles and methodologies which underpin civil engineering and you will learn to apply them to real-world problems. Through investigation and evaluation of design-related engineering issues, you will learn to produce innovative solutions using technical literature and the appropriate codes of industry standards and practice.

You will gain detailed knowledge and technical proficiency in health and safety, sustainable, environmental and economic development, and the frameworks in which they operate.

You will be equipped with the problem-solving skills you will need to work on projects such as designing large structures and a variety of infrastructure including roads, water supply and drainage, bridges, airports, tunnels, and sea and flood defences.

Your learning process will be based on a variety of experiences including lectures, tutorials, case studies and design-based exercises that will enable you to develop applied skills, participate in critical analysis and practise your presentation skills.

Our modern, well-equipped laboratories will give you the chance to get involved with industry-standard tools and testing. We'll show you how to examine the strength of materials for structures and understand the latest geotechnical and structural analysis software packages. 

We can offer you great links with industry, thanks largely to our teaching team, who have great experience across different areas of engineering.

Site visits and guest lectures from industry professionals will also form part of your programme and you will be encouraged to become an active member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

To study this course, you will require broadband internet connection with a speed of 2mbps and working speakers. You will need Windows 7 / Mac OSX 10.8 or above and have access to Chrome v63 or higher (recommended), Edge v42+, Firefox v57+ or Safari v6+. Java and Adobe Acrobat Reader will need to be enabled and you will need a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations. The following are also included in the cost of your course:

Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

    Based at Northern Terrace at our City Campus, our building materials laboratory offers full-scale structural element testing with up to 250 tonnes loading capacity, hydraulics testing with open-flow apparatus and a pump rig, and concrete beam production with mixing, casting and material strength and consistency testing.

    Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire.
