Civil engineering is a rewarding profession with engineers increasingly working in multidisciplinary teams. This practical course will ensure you have the technical and management capabilities to contribute effectively in a wide range of environments.

Your course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, should you choose to take one. You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for membership of the accrediting institutions.



Accredited IEng degree - Accredited IEng (Full)
This degree is accredited by the JBM as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). The JBM consists of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year. This provides you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace which will help you apply for jobs when you graduate.

You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for membership of the accrediting institutions.

To broaden your industry knowledge the course team also arrange regular personal development sessions. These are generally provided by leading industry professionals and will assist you in choosing an appropriate area of civil engineering to enter on graduation. We also have close links with the Institution of Civil Engineers and host a number of regional events for you to attend.

UCAS Tariff Points: 96 points required. (Minimum 64 from two A Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies. This must include two science or numerate subjects. Irish Leaving Certificate:

Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Teaching and learning

We regularly review our courses to ensure we are offering you the best educational experience. This course is currently being reviewed for 2019 entry, therefore the information below is correct for students joining us in 2018/19 but there may be changes for students who wish to join us in 2019/20. The full confirmed details of the course as it will be offered for 2019/20 will be published from August 2018. Check this page from that point for details of the course you can expect to study.

Gain a reflective understanding of the key principles that underpin engineering and develop your knowledge of the multi-disciplinary environment in which civil engineering operates. The tabs below detail what and how you will study in each year of your course. The balance of assessments and overall workload will be informed by your core modules and the option modules you choose to study – the information provided is an indication of what you can expect and may be subject to change. The option modules listed are also an indication of what will be available to you. Their availability is subject to demand and you will be advised which option modules you can choose at the beginning of each year of study.

In your first year, you will study six core modules providing you with skills to analyse situations, analogue and digital data, or existing knowledge to provide solutions to basic civil engineering problems. You will develop an awareness of the basic aspects of safety and sustainability.

Core Modules

Enhance your understanding of the properties of materials in both the design and construction phases of any civil engineering project.

We will enhance your mathematical skills so that you can find solutions to technical problems, manipulate and solve equations, and utilise data production and statistical methods to solve construction problems.

Develop your knowledge of civil engineering procedures in the professional and legal working environment.

An insight into the techniques of observation and calculations using computing technology to collect, manipulate and display geospatial data.

Take a look at the behaviour of structures - forces, stresses, strain, tension, compression and bending - and recognise the role of materials testing.

You will present proposals for developing a brownfield site. As part of a team, you will also design, construct and test a model structure.

Civil Engineering Technology Project (part-time only)

Further enhancing the skills you have developed during the first year, in your second year, you will apply your knowledge to more advanced civil engineering problems. You will learn to use logical reasoning as a tool for effective decision making an problem solving. You will study five core modules and choose one option module from the list below.

Core Modules

An introduction to the factors which influence the sustainability of materials within construction, helping you to appreciate the rationale behind different approaches to structural design.

Build your understanding of the commercial and contractual procedures involved in delivering civil engineering projects, such as preparing detailed risk assessments and recognising different contract types.

Learn about structural geology and the identification of minerals and rocks for engineering purposes.

Enhance your knowledge of factors which affect highway and traffic engineering, including characteristics of urban and rural roads, and pavement structure.

A further insight into properties of materials and their use and deterioration in service. In particular, you will study concrete - its design, use on site and the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures.

We will build on your expertise in the concepts of structural mechanics and how these are used to analyse a variety of structures.

Using the principles and techniques introduced in earlier modules, you will produce design and management related solutions for a civil engineering scenario based project.

During year three, you will adopt an increasingly effective approach to civil engineering problem solving, analysing complex situations using digital technologies. You will focus on the professional environment and study design, health and safety, risk management and sustainability to an industry-standard level. You will study three core modules and choose two option modules from the list below (Structural Engineering OR Highway Engineering B, and Geotechnical Engineering B OR Infrastructure Management).

Core Modules

We'll build your understanding of the behaviour of fluids. You'll study engineering problems involving pipe flow, open channel flow systems and investigate flow measuring techniques.

Working to a clearly defined brief based on a simulated industrial scenario, you will produce a major piece of work to demonstrate your sound engineering and management judgement.

Focus on mathematical methods that support decision making in civil engineering. You'll look at statistical analysis, operational research, financial appraisal and traditional mathematical techniques.

Option modules may include:

Enhance your awareness of structural behaviour and limit state design principles. You'll develop your analysis and design expertise in order to produce code compliant structural solutions to a professional standard.

Explore infrastructure asset management - the on-going maintenance, repair and upgrading of civil engineering infrastructure through the whole life cycle.

We'll develop your appreciation of site investigation techniques, particularly relating to the interpretation of geotechnical data. You'll look at design applications related to water flow, effective stress parameters, slope stability, foundation bearing capacity and retaining walls.

A further insight into the factors which affect highway and traffic engineering, developing your expertise in specialist areas of highway design, construction and maintenance.

Fees & funding

Fees for this course are not yet confirmed. You will normally spend a whole year in placement. For this year you will be given a full tuition fee waiver. See further information on financing your studies or information about whether you may qualify for one of our Bursaries and Scholarships.

Educational visits - The cost for these trips covers travel, accommodation and subsistence. The price varies year by year and attendance is optional.

Study materials - We provide core materials during your studies and you may choose to purchase additional materials. This is not compulsory and will depend upon the projects you undertake.

Tuition fees
Your tuition fees cover the cost of registration, tuition, academic supervision, assessments and examinations.
The following are also included in the cost of your course:

  • Free wifi via eduroam
  • Skills workshops and resources
  • Library membership, giving access to more than 500,000 printed, multimedia and digital resources
  • Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC, laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app

Home to our first-rate sporting facilities – Headingley Campus has a rich and diverse history having played to visitors such as Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde. Set in 100 acres of parkland, with easy access to Leeds city centre, many of our buildings look out onto our grassy acre – a perfect place for hanging out, playing games and catching up with friends on long summer days. Headingley Campus has modern sport science laboratories, animation and music studios and the latest computing labs, as well as one of our libraries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
