Overview

Develop the skills to prepare you for a career working with new and future technologies. There is a strong demand for computer science graduates and this course will equip you with the knowledge and expertise to fill this skills gap.

The Government have committed to developing a skilled workforce in the influential STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. This course aligns with the key themes of these subject areas and will provide you with the skills to solve computer programming problems in a range of industries.

You will develop an understanding of how computer systems work, the problems that can arise and the implications of what companies are developing. The course will enhance your teamworking and project management abilities, while honing your expertise in emerging technologies.

We also offer this course as a four year MEng. This integrated masters course allows you to combine undergraduate study with a masters level qualification. Find out more here

Our partnership with global communications technology giant Avaya brings the company’s cutting-edge expertise to the heart of Headingley Campus. You will have direct access to the Avaya Breeze, Avaya Aura and Avaya Equinox platforms as you explore the real-time optimisation of new middleware. This facility forms the company’s regional base, meaning you will be part of a community that includes potential employers who use Avaya’s products, enabling you to start building your professional network while you study.

You will have the opportunity to undertake a paid placement after your second year. This placement (subject to availability) will allow you to develop your practical skills, giving you hands-on experience to add to your CV.

That hands-on experience will also be at the heart of your learning. We have strong contacts with industry and our teaching team will use their research and industrial experience to ensure the course is current and reflective of the latest trends in computer science engineering.

Practical assessments such as demonstrations, group projects, reports and presentations will help you link the theory you are learning to industry practice, preparing you for life in the workplace. You will also be able showcase your projects and network with experts from industry at our annual showcase event.

Gain an insight into computers, operating systems and networks - discover how they work internally and how they work with each other to provide the common computing experience with which we are all familiar.

Develop your skills in report writing and presenting as you enhance your understanding of many aspects of computer science, including software engineering, computer networking, digital media, AI, cloud computing, sustainable computing and big data.

You will be introduced to the fundamentals of computer programming, including variables and data types, understanding sequence, selection and iteration, basic algorithms, and structured programming and reuse.

Discover the stages involved in the development of database systems and acquire database modelling and implementation skills. You will also examine the ethical and professional issues associated with the database development process.

Extend the basic knowledge of programming you have gained on the fundamentals module by focusing on the concept of object oriented programming and its associated design techniques.

Focus on advanced programming concepts and their underlying principles, along with professional techniques used during development of good quality software products.

Gain a thorough understanding of the various protocols and architectures that apply when creating modern day converged networks. You will learn about various quality of service attributes that apply in networks which support converged applications such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Kiran's teaching and research interests are in the areas of networking and sustainable computing. Before entering academia, he worked in industry developing a bespoke secure Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions which created a secure cryptographic communications tunnel for voice and data communications. His most recent research was on including malicious signature detection into networking protocols to create a ubiquitous security system.

Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located on the ground floor of the libraries.

Additional costs
In many cases, costs associated with your course will be included in your course fee. However, in some cases there are ‘essential’ additional costs (those that you will be required to meet in addition to your course fee), and/or ‘optional’ additional costs (costs that are not required, but that you might choose to pay). We have included those essential or optional additional costs that relate to your course, below.

Course-specific essentials

  • Accommodation / travel / commuting costs incurred during any placements
    (Payments for these costs should be negotiated as part of the placement itself, or considered as any other normal outgoing while working would be. Placements are usually paid)

Course-specific optional costs

  • A laptop running Windows 10
    (Laptops can be borrowed from the university for free should you choose not to purchase your own and all computer labs at the university run Windows 10)

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (the library stocks books from your module reading list and can order books from other locations for you if a copy isn’t available but you may wish to purchase copies for yourself); placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you will need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

You may prefer to have your own mobile phone/tablet (to access university online services) but you can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: such as 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in social learning spaces and in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located on the ground floor of the libraries.

This list is not exhaustive and costs will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees.

    Computing laboratories

    The technology on offer at our Headingley Campus will enable you to pursue your passion and achieve your career goals. You will find three networked labs with an imaging system to design and configure your own operating system, a lab for capturing games footage, and networking systems and forensic analysis software. We also have eight specialist labs running Windows and Mac OS X and labs running Oracle and Oracle Apex.

    24/7 Library and learning spaces

    Our online library is a vital resource, allowing you to access tens of thousands of digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals, subject-specific web pages and databases, from any machine anywhere in the world. Our split-site Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, so you will always find space to work, whether that is in our silent study areas or social learning spaces.

Headingley Campus has modern sport science laboratories, animation and music studios and the latest computing labs, as well as one of our libraries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
