Computing for Business

At a time when big business is increasingly relying on technology, companies are eager to employ skilled graduates who understand computing technology and know how it can be used to help businesses succeed. This course will enhance your computing expertise and technical skills while developing your awareness of the business environment, putting you at an advantage in today’s competitive jobs market.

You will begin by studying the fundamentals of computing before investigating in your second year how businesses use computer systems and technology. In your final year, you will focus on key industry themes, including IT strategy, emerging technologies and managing change. A choice of option modules will allow you to hone the technical skills you will need to deal with a wide range of business problems.

Throughout the course, you will enhance your employability by learning a range of key competencies, including building websites, designing information systems and writing code to generate reports that will allow you to make strategic predictions for businesses. Learning how to communicate information and ideas clearly and in a compelling way will be an important element of the course. Coupled with proven skills in data and information analysis, you will graduate with the confidence and ability to shape business decisions at the highest level.

Our partnership with global communications technology giant Avaya brings the company’s cutting-edge expertise to the heart of Headingley Campus. You will have direct access to the Avaya Breeze, Avaya Aura and Avaya Equinox platforms as you explore the real-time optimisation of new middleware. This facility forms the company’s regional base, meaning you will be part of a community that includes potential employers who use Avaya’s products, enabling you to start building your professional network while you study.

We are committed to providing you with hands-on experience. This course is all about learning and doing, so you will combine theoretical knowledge with developing practical skills in a range of areas including building dashboards, analysing data and designing and coding websites. You will also learn from industry experts who will deliver guest lectures focusing on how advances on computing technology are revolutionising the world of business.

You will learn from specialist tutors, and you will be encouraged to challenge them with new ideas and projects. With their support, you will cultivate an enquiring mind that is primed to analyse, to question and to seek out answers.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

To study this course, you will require broadband internet connection with a speed of 2mbps and working speakers. You will need Windows 7 / Mac OSX 10.8 or above and have access to Chrome v63 or higher (recommended), Edge v42+, Firefox v57+ or Safari v6+. Java and Adobe Acrobat Reader will need to be enabled and you will need a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.
