Counselling & Psychotherapy

Overview

Accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), this course will enable you to become a professional counsellor or psychotherapist. It will help you work towards practitioner accreditation with the BACP and could help you develop a specialist role within your current occupation.

You will gain an understanding of relational theory and practice and will learn how to apply your therapeutic counselling and psychotherapy skills with clients. Through clinical practice, you will identify your strengths and areas for development, ensuring you become a capable and self-reflective practitioner.

We will help you find a suitable work placement where you will have client contact on a weekly basis and totalling 100 hours. You will also undertake 20 hours of personal counselling from a network of professional counsellors approved by the University.

We help you find a suitable work placement where you will have weekly client contact time - 100 hours in total. You will also undertake 20 hours of personal counselling from a network of professional counsellors approved by our University. Undergoing clinical supervision with a counsellor is a vital part of becoming a skilled and knowledgeable reflective therapeutic practitioner.

Entry Requirements

Requirements:Applicants should normally have at least a second class honours degree and have completed a face to face Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent (at least 90 hours study).

All suitable candidates will be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Enhanced Criminal History Checks
Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course. For further information on DBS checks, click here.

The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency therefore require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will be required after enrolment.

IELTS:
IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Develop the awareness and proficiency in both personal and professional competence enabling you to work effectively as a reflective practitioner employing a relational approach to counselling.

You will develop a sound theoretical base allowing you to begin safe and effective clinical practice under appropriate supervision.

You will further develop your therapeutic interventions by learning the counselling skills, supervision and theory for practice.

Understand what it takes to establish and maintain an effective, collaborative therapeutic relationship within the BACP ethical framework.

You will develop your professional approach as a reflective practitioner by using feedback from peers, tutors, supervisors and other professionals.

Sue Sherwin is Dean for the School of Health and Community Studies. She joined our University as a Senior Lecturer in 1996 after supporting the development of the first degree in Mental Health Nursing from Leeds Beckett.

Our School is committed to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of communities and individuals. All of our academics have worked in health, public health and the caring professions, and many still maintain their professional practice to ensure we maintain a strong link between our teaching and the demands of the professional workplace. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
