Overview

A foundation year at Leeds Beckett is an ideal transitional step into higher education and will fully prepare you for undergraduate study. We are offering our BA (Hons) Creative Event Design degree with an integrated foundation year. If you don't have the required UCAS points to be able to secure a place on the full degree programme, this foundation year will prepare you for academic life at our university.

During the foundation year, you will study four events, tourism and hospitality management related modules. These will introduce you to the subjects included on each of our 10 routes, from tourism principles and practice to customer service experiences.

Two additional modules will develop the academic and study skills needed to successfully transition from school or the workplace to higher education and on to your full degree programme. You will also learn how to access the extensive resources and support services available here at Leeds Beckett, whether you need a hand locating specialist materials in the Library, or you need advice about personal issues.

During your second, third and fourth years you will study an average of six modules each year. Visit each of the course pages below for details of the modules offered as part of your chosen course.

As a student, you will immediately join the UK Centre for Events Management (UKCEM) network, a community of practitioners who have been delivering events management education for more than 20 years. Our specialist team draws together academics and industry professionals who have designed and developed dynamic courses that are informed by practice and research.

Our vast array of industry contacts and rich alumni network will give you access to the festivals, corporate and cultural sector and you will be encouraged and supported to volunteer or work on events, giving you the chance to develop your professional skills.

Industry professionals and leading creative event experts will also be invited to speak with you, offering you their unique insights and allowing you the opportunity to network and develop your own professional contacts. Through these special events, you will learn about the wide variety of opportunities that this inspiring sector can offer.

Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

GCSE English Language at Grade C or above (Grade 4 for those sitting their GCSE from 2017 onwards) or equivalent. Key Skills Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs.

Leeds Beckett University is committed to ensuring that every student with the potential to succeed at our University is able to do so regardless of their background. For this reason we operate a contextual admissions policy, which means we take into account a range of additional factors when we assess a student’s application. Applicants who meet at least one of our contextual admissions criteria will be offered a place on this course with lower (predicted or achieved) UCAS Tariff Points than our published tariff (above).

Our contextual admissions criteria are: 

  • Home postcode is in an area where few people go to University (POLAR4 quintile 1 or 2 area. This can be checked on the Office for Students website)
  • Declared disability on the UCAS application form (or direct application for part time applicants)
  • Over the age of 21 on the 1st of September before the course starts
  • Declared as a care leaver on the UCAS application form (or direct application for part time applicants)
Our place as an Anchor Institution:

Leeds Beckett University is in the top 10 universities nationwide for being representative of our local community. To further strengthen our position as a key provider of education and training for West Yorkshire we apply an Anchor Institution Policy in our admissions process. Students who apply to us from any of the five Local Authority areas in West Yorkshire (BD, HD, HX, LS, WF) will be offered a place on this course with lower (predicted or achieved) UCAS Tariff Points.

Mature Applicants:

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ policy. Please ensure that you list both your qualifications and any relevant work experience in your application so that we can consider you under both schemes where applicable..

  • Additional qualifications
    (Opportunities may be provided for undertaking additional certifications, such as Personal Licensing or Event Safety Passport. Further opportunities may be provided to undertake additional qualifications either directly or through the Event Society / Students’ Union.)
  • Event attendance
    (Opportunities are provided to attend events beyond the curriculum. Cost will depend on location and ticket price.)

 

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (the library stocks books from your module reading list and can order books from other locations for you if a copy isn’t available but you may wish to purchase copies for yourself); placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you will need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

You may prefer to have your own mobile phone/tablet (to access university online services) but you can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in social learning spaces and in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located on the ground floor of the libraries.
