Explore the key management concepts, theories and models used in coaching and mentoring through an in-depth research project.

You will learn to critique and enhance your professional coaching skills through reflexive practice and action learning. You will also hone your understanding of coaching practices to develop your personal coaching profile. You might already be a practising business coach seeking to enhance your coaching methodology and skills, an executive who wants to add coaching to your consultancy portfolio or a human resources director. You will learn to use your skill set and experience as a catalyst for positive change in the workplace.

Your supervisor will help you develop your research skills as you carry out an evidence-based research project on a topic linked to your professional practice, expertise or interests. Areas you might choose to focus on include ontological coaching, team coaching or developmental coaching.

The course is aimed at practicing business coaches seeking to enhance their coaching methodology and skills, HR Directors and training consultants, those with line management responsibility, executives who wish to add coaching to their consultancy portfolio and aspiring coaches from related backgrounds, such as counselling, psychotherapy, teaching and business psychology.

The award has many benefits including full advanced standing and module exemption given to prior professional and academic coaching qualifications; assessment by professional 'personal' reflective assignment; assessments are directly applied to your working environment thereby enabling you to apply and crucially evaluate your coaching skills and improve your professional practice.

Professor Jeff Gold is a renowned expert in the field of Organisational Learning and is a founding member of the Northern Leadership Academy. He has published widely including key texts such as Leadership and Management Development, Strategies for Action, Human Resource Development and Human Resource Management.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to this top-up award should already hold a PG Diploma in Coaching; a PG Diploma in the cognate subjects of Leadership, HR, Organisational Behaviour, Strategy, Management Development, Decision-making, Governance or Action Learning with at least 60 level 7 credits including specific coaching areas, this can include sports coaching; a PG Diploma in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. Course Director

Nick is the Director of Executive Learning within Leeds Business School. Working with the University’s Centre for Governance, Leadership & Global Responsibility, he has overseen a variety of executive courses including MBA (Executive), MA Executive & Business Coaching and MSc Executive Leadership & Corporate Social Responsibility, and professional programmes such as the Institute of Directors qualification. His is a specialist in corporate governance, decision-making, and executive and business coaching. Nick has worked with leading corporate mentors and coaches including Peter Bluckert, Bob Garvey, David Clutterbuck, Jeff Gold and Paul Turner. Nick takes a practitioner approach to coaching and mentoring and focuses on developing high-contact, deep-dive personal growth workshops with groups and teams with the aim to enable both immediate and long-term growth potential.

My time working with leaders has shown me that an effective coach can deepen their client’s understanding of self and that they can provide their client with the psychological tools to enrich their life. A great coach inspires those they work with and, through informed insight, can read the culture of a working environment and help to enrich it.

    You will use Critical Decision Immersive Simulations in this facility to develop effective leadership and group participant skills. The simulations replicate the complexities of real life scenarios that would challenge decision makers, aiming to improve your decision making, critical thinking and communication skills.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
