International Foundation Studies

Overview

If English is not your first language, this course will give you the skills to study any undergraduate degree. You will gain an understanding of British culture and universities, improving your English language, academic research and study skills.

You will have the option to take a module on the subject you are interested in studying as your undergraduate degree. Subjects covered are business and management, law and social sciences, architecture and art and design.

You will also become more aware of the requirements of studying at a UK university, helping you to be more successful on your chosen undergraduate degree. You will develop the following areas: English language, academic skills, group work, cultural awareness, maths and a subject module from your undergraduate degree choice.

Some parts of the course may be studied with British students, while others sessions will be with other international students.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Class time:Minimum of 12 hours of class time per week, plus personal tutorials, drop in tutorials and 15 hours per week of self-study.

Please note:your class timetable will be provided at induction. All classes take place from Monday to Friday.

Class size: Maximum 23 students, except in the Living in Britain lectures and some subject module classes.

Teaching Materials : The cost of teaching materials varies per module but will not exceed £20 for any one module. Many of the materials are available for loan free-of-charge from the University library.

The minimum age upon entry to this course is 17. Please note that our English language courses are adult courses. The university does not act `in loco parentis' and cannot provide 24 hour supervision of our 17-year-olds. A signed Parental Consent form for Under 18s is required prior to enrolment.


REASEARCH EXCELLENCE FRAMEWORK 2014

Twice as many of our staff - 220 - were entered into the research assessment for 2014 compared to the number entered in 2008.
We will help you improve your skills through projects, essays and practical exercises. Your understanding of British culture and learning at a UK university will develop through our lectures and seminars. You will be assessed by a mixture of coursework and classroom tests in writing, reading, speaking and listening tests. You will also be given access to online self-study resources and allocated a personal tutor who you will meet regularly.

After completing this course ,your communication and presentation skills, time management, problem solving, and organisation and planning skills will all increase. Your intercultural awareness and self-confidence will benefit and you will be able to show greater initiative in all that you do. All of these skills will prepare you for both your next programme of study and when you are looking for work after you graduate.

This course welcomes a range of guest speakers. They will provide unique and insightful views and opinions on settling into the UK and how to achieve the best from your time at university. You will also have the opportunity to attend and take part in a conference where you can meet international foundation students from other universities in the UK. When studying at Leeds Beckett University, you will be able to volunteer for a range of opportunities, both here and abroad.

The English modules on this course are accredited by the British Council and taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers. We are also an approved Cambridge Delta centre.

Where appropriate, experience and professional qualifications will be considered in place of academic qualifications.

You need to show English language ability of IELTS 4.5 overall with no skill below 4.5.

Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Wendy uses her experiences of teaching around the world to support her international students during their time in the UK. She taught English in Japan, Ecuador and Turkey, then lived in London before moving to Leeds in 2003. Wendy is currently studying for a PhD researching Turkish immigrants in Germany.
Our International Foundation Studies course will teach you the language and academic skills you need for success. You'll mix with students from all over the world, developing your confidence and your academic English with the help of expert teachers.

Fees & funding

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2017/18 is £9,250. However, this course attracts a fee waiver of £1,250 and the discounted fee payable is £8,000. No funding is available from the Student Loans Company (England) for this course starting in January. Individuals who want to apply for financial support should consider beginning the course in September.
