Health and Community Care

Overview

If you currently work or volunteer in health and social care and want to enhance your practice and career prospects, this is your opportunity to extend your knowledge of the sector and refine your practical skills. You will explore the context of your practice against a backdrop of changing local, national and political drivers. You will be encouraged to analyse your decision making and to reflect on your current practice, helping you to generate new ideas for use in your current role and for the benefit of patients and service users.

Research Excellence Framework 2014
Research Excellence Framework 2014: 40% of our research in the Psychology unit was judged to be world leading or internationally excellent.
You will develop the expertise required within health and social care sectors, and learn to respond appropriately to changing local, regional and political drivers across a range of settings such as mental health, social care and adult health. You can also choose from a range of optional modules to develop into your chosen professional area.

Entry Requirements

Additional Requirements: Applicants should either have a HND, Foundation degree or an equivalent award of 120 level 5 credit points in the cognate subjects of Health Care, Nursing (Acute and Community), Health and Social Care, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics or Radiography or an award in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for. Applicants who do not meet this academic requirement are advised to undertake the Professional Profile Development module in order to apply for recognition of prior (experiential) learning. All students will normally be working, in paid or unpaid employment, within health and/or community care as students need to be able to reflect on their experience and relate theory with practice. All applicants should be able to evidence recent professional development/study; of working with different patient/client groups; awareness of current policies affecting the sector and potential implications for service delivery.

English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 6.0. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Dean of School

Sue Sherwin is Dean for the School of Health and Community Studies. She joined our University as a Senior Lecturer in 1996 after supporting the development of the first degree in Mental Health Nursing from Leeds Beckett.

Our School is committed to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of communities and individuals. All of our academics have worked in health, public health and the caring professions, and many still maintain their professional practice to ensure we maintain a strong link between our teaching and the demands of the professional workplace. We bring this quality of care to the way in which we support our students through their learning.

Fees & funding

The Undergraduate fee rates for 2018/19 are still subject to government approval at the current time. Early indications from the Government suggest that the rate will be set at approximately £9,250 per year for full time students. Part time students will pay a pro-rata of this based on the number of modules studied and the credit load of those modules.
Fees for this course are not yet confirmed.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
