Overview

As a health visitor, you will have a crucial role in ensuring that people have the best possible start in life.

This course provides registered nurses and midwives with the opportunity to become a specialist community public health visitor on the third part of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) register.

Combining both theory-based and practice-based learning, you will examine the complexities of delivering health and social care services, especially in relation to professional health visiting. You will develop the confidence and expertise to be able to take on leadership roles, influencing and implementing public health policies that will help children, young people and families improve their life chances.

You'll have a close partnership with your assessor and supervisor, and will develop in practice through leadership, multi-disciplinary working, implementing public health policies and influencing practice.

You will also have the opportunity to progress to our MSc, which incorporates a dissertation, systematic review or work based study, and offers you the opportunity to pursue research as a scholarly activity and influence practice.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

To study this course, you will require broadband internet connection with a speed of 2mbps and working speakers. You will need Windows 7 / Mac OSX 10.8 or above and have access to Chrome v63 or higher (recommended), Edge v42+, Firefox v57+ or Safari v6+. Java and Adobe Acrobat Reader will need to be enabled and you will need a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have NMC first level registration, at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subject of Health and be able to evidence recent professional development. Applicants who do not meet this academic requirement are advised to undertake the Professional Profile Development module in order to apply for recognition of prior (experiential) learning. Details of the module can be found at this link All suitable candidates will be invited to attend an interview. Applicants will also need to secure a suitable practice placement in order to undertake the course. All applications should be supported by two references, either academic or professional; a template can be accessed at this link, please note references should be accompanied by a covering letter on headed paper or emailed directly by the referee. All applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements, please access further details at this link Students will be recruited on the basis that their values align with those of the NHS Constitution, as well as having the right skills and aptitude, in accordance with Value Based Recruitment and if selected will need to attend an interview. At interview you will be tested on the values which promote quality care and a positive patient, staff and student experience. We recruit to this course jointly with our placement partners in the West Yorkshire region. Applications are made through the NHS jobs website in the first instance and applicants will complete their application based on a job description and person specification, an example is available here

SELECTION CRITERIA:

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.

IELTS:

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

ENHANCED CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS:

Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course, (processed through the University only). The University is unable to accept DBS checks obtained through another institution (this includes those registered with the DBS Update Service); the checks undertaken by the University are appropriate to the course of study and relevant regulated activity placements. For important information on the UK Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check requirements please refer to the Guidance on DBS and Additional Checks.

SELF DECLARATION:

You will be asked to complete this online form as part of the DBS check process. You will be asked to identify on the self-declaration form if you have any cautions/convictions that would not be filtered out on a DBS certificate. Please refer to the following website for guidance on filtering. The form will also ask if you have resided outside of the UK after the age of 16, to establish if an Overseas Police Record check may be required.

Overseas Police Checks/Letter of Good Conduct

The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants; those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency of 12 months or more after the age of 16; therefore, require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country(ies) prior to entry on to the course. A UK DBS check will also be required prior to enrolment; the DBS team will send you guidance on how to apply following your offer of a place. The application process and timeframes for Overseas Police checks can differ from country to country and so it is recommended that you start the process as soon as possible after you have been made a conditional/Unconditional offer to ensure you have enough lead in time to obtain the check prior to enrolment. For some countries, an individual can only apply in person and so it is preferable for those applicants still resident in the relevant country, to apply before entering the UK.

HEALTH CHECKS:

For certain Professional Body courses, Occupational Health checks are also part of the entry requirements. Applicants will be asked to complete an on-line Health Questionnaire and sent guidance and links on how to complete this following your offer of a place.

Mature Applicants:

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. All students will be considered through the contextual admissions policy described above. If you do not meet the requirements through the contextual admissions policy, we may still be able to make you an offer if you have recent relevant work experience through our ‘Recognition of Prior Learning’ policy. Please ensure that you list both your qualifications and any relevant work experience in your application so that we can consider you under both schemes where applicable..

All applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, for example we accept some Functional Skills Tests.

Gain a theoretical, methodological and practical foundation for social research, enabling you to act as a social researcher to resolve practice based problems.

Learn what it takes to meet NMC standards for specialist practice, specifically standards that relate to your role in leading and managing specialist practice.

Develop your interpersonal capacities and skills by gaining the theoretical knowledge of people's emotional/mental health and wellbeing in relation to being service users/patients within health and social care systems, and relate this understanding to their particular areas of practice.

  • Practice / clinical experience (you may opt to spend time with different health and social care providers and services. Costs will vary depending on location)
  • Placements: As part of your educational practice / clinical experience, you will need to be able to travel to different health and social care sites. In many instances, these costs will be covered by your employer as part of your staff travel expenses process

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.

As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.

This list is not exhaustive, costs are approximate and will vary depending on the choices you make during your course. Any rental, travel or living costs are also in addition to your course fees. If you choose to study via distance learning, you may not be able to access all of the facilities listed if you are not able to visit us on campus.
