To be successful in hospitality, you must be innovative and forward-thinking. We will teach you how to think strategically and understand how to manage employees and hospitality resources effectively. You will undertake a series of projects, learning how to devise, develop and successfully implement an array of hospitality events.
From the very start of your course you will learn how to be a manager, exploring the key issues and foundations of the hospitality industry. Your learning will take place at the Carnegie Pavilion, which has cutting-edge facilities, meeting rooms, social learning spaces and a commercial kitchen and restaurant to allow you to gain work-related, hands-on experience.
You will go on to develop your leadership abilities by guiding groups of other students as you oversee a hospitality concept from its first stages to its implementation in our restaurant. The final phase focuses on real-life consultancy projects and assessments relevant to your future career.
If you choose to study our sandwich option, you will spend your third year working in the hospitality industry, gaining the practical skills you need to be a successful leader in the sector. Our placement students have worked at companies both at home and abroad including the Radisson Blu here in Leeds and La Gorce Country Club in Miami.

Regular guest speakers from the industry will give you a broad view of the industry and provide networking opportunities. There are a number of field trips - some will be module related and others are for the purpose of personal or team development skills.
There is an opportunity to negotiate your own assessments, tailor the course to your own interests and goals and undertake on-going training throughout your course in specific industry interests and qualifications.
The foundation of our course is based on the view that hospitality is, by definition, international so our graduates have gone on to work all over the world - Canada, Africa, Australia, Hong Kong are just a few of the places they have been successful. If you take a gap year after study you can utilise your skills in well-paid roles around the world to finance your travels.
"I was really lucky to experience the very best hospitality environments during my time at University. I did my first placement at a boutique hotel and the second at The Ritz in London. Working at one of the most iconic hotels in the world prepared me to offer a personalised, bespoke service in my current job."

I am currently looking at how sustainable management practices in the meetings sector can assist in achieving UN sustainable development goals. I am a strong advocate of research-informed teaching and let my students pick apart my research findings and apply them to their own setting. As a result, my students gain unique and up-to-date insights to inform their own learning and practice.
