You are strongly encouraged to take a paid work placement in the third year of your course to develop and enhance your transferable employability skills. Previous students on this course have secured placements with top companies including BP, Panasonic, GE Capital and Bentley Motors. We have a dedicated employability and placements office to support you and provide you with access to a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement guidance and seminars are available on topics such as CV and letter writing, how to succeed at interview, assessment centres and psychometric tests.

Our Study Abroad programme is a popular option for many students and you can visit partner institutions in countries such as the USA, Australia, France and Norway. Our students often enter competitions such as the IBM Universities Business Challenge, the UK's premier business simulation in which we compete against teams from other universities. You may also apply for student membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD). You will be taught at the Rose Bowl, our award winning home in the heart of the Leeds business district.

Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Teaching and learning

Develop the specialist HR and business management knowledge and skills to make an effective contribution in the context of contemporary business practice. The tabs below detail what and how you will study in each year of your course. The balance of assessments and overall workload will be informed by your core modules and the option modules you choose to study; the information provided is an indication of what you can expect and may be subject to change. The option modules listed are also an indication of what will be available to you. Their availability is subject to demand and you will be advised which option modules you can choose at the beginning of each year of study.

Start to understand the key concepts of HRM and business through six core modules. The Academic & Critical Thinking Skills module will support your transition to study at this level through a focus on developing your academic writing and presentation skills.

Focus on developing your academic scholarship and critical thinking, your professionalism and career skills, and your ability to conduct research.

Examine the production and use of financial information in human resources management (HRM). You will study a variety of topics including how businesses are financed, budgeting, capital investment decisions and the use of financial reports to inform HRM decision making.

Learn about the people side of business. This module is structured into four main themes: motivation, management, leadership and teams. You will look at these within the context of culture, political environment, global working and intercultural competence.

Understand the importance of organisational marketing in human resource management. You will become familiar with key marketing principles and appreciate how contemporary marketing concepts are applied by organisations, and the potential challenges of doing so.

Study human resources (HR) activity and its role in organisations, including its purpose and evolution. You will explore different ways of delivering HR objectives as well as developments in the management of employment relationships, and the methods that can be used to demonstrate the organisational value of HR departments.

Develop the essential tools you will need to understand the 'real-world' outcomes of economic decisions. The module will promote an understanding of wider macro-economic and policy issues relevant to human resource management.

Your five core and one option modules will enable you to build on the knowledge you gained in your first year and to apply your learning within a wider and more complex context.

Gain an understanding of the range of people-related data and information available within organisations. You will learn how to recognise relevant data and information and identify where you might find it within an organisation, using case studies as examples. Your learning will also explore how to store, collate, analyse and evaluate data in order to make evidence-based decisions.

Explore the strategic approaches that organisations take to establish themselves as employers in the labour market and to plan effectively so that they are able to meet their organisational skills needs. You will study the key operational practices that organisations use to resource their organisations effectively such as recruitment, selection, workforce planning, staff retention, succession planning, retirement and dismissal processes.

Examine the role of learning and development, particularly in relation to organisational effectiveness. You will gain in-depth knowledge of how to identify training and development needs, and the design, delivery and evaluation of learning. Your learning will explore learning and development methods such as coaching, mentoring and e-learning.

Understand the nature of managerial decision making and its complexities including the tensions between ethics and cost effectiveness. You will explore the role of cognition, perception and motivation in decision making as well as the negotiation skills essential in effective decision making.

Build on the skills developed in the Academic & Critical Thinking Skills module in year one, or study this module to begin developing your academic scholarship and critical thinking, your professionalism and career skills, and your ability to conduct research.

Option modules may include:

Develop an appreciation of the role of management can play in the process of organisational change. You will explore the forces which drive organisational change and build a broad contextual understanding of change management by studying a range of perspectives.

Employment Law for HRM

Examine complex businesses and organisations to determine how its operations and supply chain produce competitive advantage and improve performance. You will use a range of real-life scenarios along with qualitative and quantitative data to understand, apply and analyse concepts and principles from the field.

Ali worked as a planning manager in the field of oil, gas, and petrochemicals in the Persian Gulf for six years which led to his interest in management studies. He undertook a masters degree in industrial management and then started teaching in universities on various management courses while still working in industry. Ali joined Leeds Beckett in 2009 and undertook his PhD in human resource management. 

The BSc (Hons) Human Resource Management & Business course is carefully designed to enable its students to become critical thinkers. You will be taught by academic staff who already have the experience of working in industry, ensuring our graduates are familiar with contemporary issues in their organisations and are able to find critical methods and tools to resolve the real case issues.

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2018/19 is £9250. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation.

  • Access to the Hydra Suite, an on-campus system that will help you to develop effective leadership and group participant skills. We are the only business school in the world with this facility.

The simulations replicate the complexities of real life scenarios that would challenge decision makers, aiming to improve your decision making, critical thinking and communication skills.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
