Overview

Learn about the power of the tourism consumer and get ahead of the curve in tourism marketing by learning to recognise how and when travellers make decisions and what type of holidays they might wish to take.

Combine your passion for travel and exploration with a marketing focus. You will identify different customer segments to develop effective marketing strategies and campaigns aimed at the right audience, at the right time, and using the right platforms. You will gain an understanding of consumer trends – who wants what type of holiday, the types of holiday likely to be available in the future and the kinds of message consumers are likely to engage with.

You will acquire an understanding of sustainable tourism and development as well as the organisational structure and management of this ever-expanding field, helping you to learn how businesses operate and how skilled leaders can add to their success. You will also gain an insight into moral, ethical, environmental and legal issues, allowing you to make a valuable contribution to the tourism and travel sector.

In your second and third year, you will have the opportunity to further enhance your knowledge through specialist marketing modules and link your marketing work with innovative launches of new tourism experiences. In the final year, you will develop an entrepreneurial approach by working on live projects with key industry partners to create new solutions to real-life marketing challenges.

During the course, you will learn from world-leading experts in tourism and marketing as well as access to industry expertise through our series of guest lectures and our links with the Institute of Travel & Tourism (ITT) and ABTA. You will also have the opportunity to tailor your studies to suit your career aspirations through a selection of option modules.

An optional work placement and the chance to study abroad for a semester will offer you the skills and expertise that are in demand by travel and tourism employers.

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Dr Miju Choi
Dr Miju Choi
Senior Lecturer
Before joining Leeds Beckett, Dr Choi worked as a lecturer in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Management and a Masters of Science in Tourism Management, and has authored and co-authored a number of research articles in first-tier academic journals. In 2016, Dr Choi received the Rising Researcher Award at The 80th TOSOK International Tourism Conference and was also nominated as an outstanding early career researcher. She specialises in tourism marketing strategy, responsible hospitality businesses and strategic management. Her research interests include shopping tourism, destination marketing, and information technology in tourism and hospitality.
Every year, billions of people travel worldwide for work, study or to holiday. The tourism industry makes this possible—providing transport, entertainment and places to eat and sleep. “This course investigates a range of approaches and issues associated with marketing destinations and the tourist behaviour. Using selected case studies from around the world the course examines the challenges of contemporary marketing approaches to the development and promotion of tourism.
