Overview

Gain a broad understanding of business theories and management practices to complement the legal expertise you will develop on this qualifying law degree. Your business management knowledge combined with legal expertise will be sought after by modern law firms with alternative business structures and large workforces of paralegals. As a qualifying law degree, this course is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board as meeting the academic requirements of your legal training, and completion will enable you to undertake further study in order to become a solicitor or barrister.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

Changes to legal education and training
Legal education and training is currently under detailed review by professional regulators in the legal sector. The review will examine the routes currently open and the qualifications required to become a solicitor or barrister, and includes a reflection on changes to and removal of existing routes, as well as the possibility of establishing new ones.

Currently, students can complete a qualifying law degree, the Graduate Diploma Law (GDL) and then the Legal Practice Course (LPC) to qualify as a solicitor or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) to become a barrister; this will remain unchanged until August 2020 for solicitors and August 2019 for barristers.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) have issued a common protocol for guidance. This can be found by visiting the SRA website.

We are dedicated to supporting your professional development and ensuring you have the valuable contacts to be a work-ready graduate. You will be able to take advantage of the established professional networks built up by Leeds Law School and Leeds Business School over many years in the region and beyond.

Our guest lecture programme will refine your knowledge and inspire your learning. High-profile speakers have included ministers, judges, the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, the president of the Academy of Marketing, the chief executive of the British Bankers' Association, the chief economist of Yorkshire Bank and the editor of Cosmopolitan.

Leeds Law School sits in the heart of Leeds, the most important legal centre outside London, with its own bespoke courtroom and state-of-the-art teaching spaces.

You will have the opportunity to take part in regional and national competitions which will hone your skills, such as mooting. Competitions run with local legal employers allow you to showcase your skills and experience, with the aim of enhancing your CV and professional reputation.

You will develop your interpersonal and employability skills giving legal presentations to schools and community groups, and you will also have the opportunity to put theory into practice at a pro bono clinic, where you will offer supervised legal advice to the public.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.
