Overview

Help tackle the big public health issues of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease by becoming an expert in food and nutrition. By analysing how lifestyle affects food and nutrition, the vested interests of the food industry and the role of food and nutrition in disease, you will gain a solid understanding of current issues, enabling you to make a positive difference in a variety of nutrition-related roles around the world.

You will develop a range of practical skills, including the ability to devise programmes for interventions, secure funding from commissioners and report your findings to wider audiences. By working face-to-face with community groups, you will understand how to successfully engage with clients and influence behaviour change using websites, media presentations, workshops and social media.

Our links with employers in the field of nutrition will ensure you have an opportunity to integrate work experience alongside your academic study, enhancing your employability and enabling you to meet the Association for Nutrition competencies to become a registered associate nutritionist upon graduation.

You'll undertake a four to six-week placement either in the UK or abroad. It's an opportunity to gain significant work experience in areas such as food product development, weight loss and healthy lifestyles, and consultancy in either the private, public or charity sector. You'll also have access to our state-of-the-art biomedical science laboratories, clinical skills suite and kitchens, which will allow you to hone your practical skills further.

You'll be taught by an experienced team of professionals including Professor Pinki Sahota, an expert in childhood nutrition and obesity with 17 years' experience in the NHS, and Professor Alan White, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Men's Health Forum.

You'll also hear from other leading professionals in the field as we host regular guest speakers from nutritional practice, the food industry, public health departments, hospital settings and research.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Clinical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Sports Science, Sports & Exercise Science, Nutrition, Health or Psychology, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. IELTS 6.5 with no skill below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

ENHANCED CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS:

Satisfactory enhanced criminal history checks will be required by all applicants prior to acceptance on the course. For further information on DBS checks, click here. The DBS in the UK is currently not able to conduct overseas criminal record checks. International applicants, those without British Citizenship and British Citizens with a significant period of overseas residency therefore require a criminal records check or certificate of good conduct from their home/overseas country prior to entry on to the course. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Dr Tanefa Apekey
Senior Lecturer

Dr Tanefa Apekey is a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition at the Leeds Beckett School of Clinical & Applied Sciences and a Registered Nutritionist (Public Health). Tanefa’s current research focuses on systematic reviews, meta-analysis, national nutrition surveys, food composition, migrant health and engaging with communities through health education programmes. She has published in over 20 international peer review journals.

Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most modules have a credit point value of 20. The tuition fee for students entering in in 201819 on this course is £722.20 for each 20 credit point module. For modules with a different credit point value their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £36.11. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation.

Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most modules have a credit point value of 20. The tuition fee for students entering in in 201920 on this course is £777.80 for each 20 credit point module. For modules with a different credit point value their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £38.89. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation.

Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
