Pleadings for Construction Disputes

Overview

Construction law is a highly specialised field, often requiring the services of specialist barristers. If you have a masters in construction law or you are working as a construction solicitor, this course will assist you in the correct preparation of pleadings, reducing your reliance on counsel.

You will be taught by experts in the sector, including construction barristers, construction mediators and chartered arbitrators. Learning from their expertise, you will develop the specialist knowledge required to draft pleadings that can be used in construction dispute claims. You will be encouraged to share your own experiences from the workplace allowing you to put your learning into context and to make it specific to your own needs.

Taught over one or two weekends, the course will enable you to fit your learning around your working life.

This course has been designed by experts in construction law. Course Director Martin Green has been delivering our MSc Construction Law & Dispute Resolution for more than 15 years. Originally a civil engineer, Martin's interests now focus on arbitration and adjudication in construction disputes. Expert barristers will share their expertise and experiences to ensure your teaching is current and relevant.

As part of the School of Built Environment & Engineering, you will be able to access all the benefits of being a Leeds Beckett student. Our onsite Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing round the clock access to learning spaces and computers. You will also be able to access the support of our Student Hub and Student Wellbeing Team.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

Martin operated his own consultancy for 15 years, gaining experience in both design and contract administration. He is now actively involved in the assessment of Adjudicators and the organisation of continuing professional development events for both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and the Society of Construction Law. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a member of their Education & Membership Committee and a member of the Chartered Institute of Building’s Contracts and Procurement Committee.
The White Book provides very little guidance for the drafting of pleadings in construction disputes and practitioners therefore often have to rely on the services of expert counsel to produce effective pleadings. This course provides a platform for expert counsel to share those skills with construction practitioners and claims consultants.
