10-week Pre-sessional

This is a university preparation course for international students at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
International Scholarships available

Overview

This ten-week course is ideal if you need to improve your English language by the equivalent of IELTS 1.0 before starting your chosen degree. It is designed for international and EU students who already hold a conditional offer for an undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Accredited by the British Council, this course will further develop your general language skills. It will also offer extensive practice of academic reading, writing and listening, and will develop your presentation and seminar skills. With its focus on preparing you for successful university study in the UK, you will have a firm grasp of UK university culture, customs and expectations upon completion.

Learning will take place in seminars with a maximum of 20 people in a class. You will have 20 classes per week, each class lasting 50 minutes. Please note, there will be no classes on national holidays. You will also have one-to-one tutorials with your personal tutor and you will have access to lots of self-study resources stored in our online library. Your assessments will include a mix of coursework which tests your reading, writing, speaking and listening; there will be no end-of-course examination.

Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

For students who need to improve their English language by the equivalent of IELTS 0.5, we offer a 5-week version of this course.

This course will increase your communication, presentation, time management, problem solving, organisational and planning skills. Your intercultural awareness and self-confidence will benefit and you will be able to show greater initiative in all that you do. All of these skills will prepare you for both your next programme of study and when you are looking for work after you graduate.

The English modules on this course are accredited by the British Council and are taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers.

We understand that full-time study does not suit everyone. That’s why we offer courses which give you the opportunity to decide where, when and how you can get involved in learning. Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Whether you’d like to fit your studies around childcare, develop your skills while working or, quite simply, want to learn from the comfort of your own home, we can help you gain a qualification at a time and pace that suits your lifestyle.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Not only are all the modules taught online, but you will also have access to an online community and more than 140,000 books and journals in our online library.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total.

Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV.
