You will explore domestic and international tourism and you will understand that the principles of responsible tourism are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. In addition to developing your subject knowledge, you will learn how to plan, implement and evaluate responsible tourism policies and practices.
This is the only responsible tourism course in the world certified by the UNWTO.TedQual programme established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. It is taught by staff with first-hand experience in tourism management, research and consultancy, who will share their global expertise with you.

Our teaching is grounded in industry consultancy and research. The quality of our research is evident in the outstanding results achieved in the Research Assessment Exercise completed in 2014 in which Leeds Beckett came second in the country for sport and exercise science, leisure and tourism.
Staff teaching this course have played a leading role in the responsible tourism and hospitality movement through research and development work with the industry and government which enables our students to also play an important role in this sector. Lucy McCombes is a certified Travelife auditor and Dr Simon Woodward is chair of the ICOMOS-UK Cultural Tourism Committee and a Trustee of the Landscape Research Centre.

Distance Learning - overall workload
If you choose to study this course by distance learning, as a guideline you will need to allocate around 10 hours per week to complete each module plus a further five hours for additional reading and assignments. These 10 hours of teaching and learning will be delivered using a range of interactive resources, this typically includes audio and video content, group discussions, reflective exercises, quizzes, online reading and much more. All these resources are delivered through our Virtual Learning Environment and can be accessed at a time and place that suits you.
This introductory module to the course introduces the concept of responsible tourism and ensures that all students have a common knowledge base about tourism assets and the tourism industry. (This module is not available to full-time students).
This module focuses on the strategies available for the management of a destination, including evaluating the role of public sector agencies and local communities in managing tourism and exploring how the public and private sector stakeholders can work together with civil society to achieve the objectives of responsible tourism management.
Gain an understanding of marketing management principles and processes, and learn to apply them to the tourism industry in order to encourage sustainable production and responsible consumption.
Explore the relationships between host communities, their unique cultures and heritage, and the tourists who visit these destinations. You will gain an understanding of how people make and experience places, and how these places and their heritage assets can be responsibly managed.
Develop a critical understanding of the theoretical concepts and practical strategies that can be used to harness tourism and drive local economic development, community empowerment and poverty reduction.
This module focuses on the relationship between tourism and natural resources. You will develop analytical skills and strategies for the effective management of visitors to natural and rural areas, and for minimising the environmental impacts of tourism businesses.
This module involves learning the skills needed to research and assess responsible tourism initiatives and make realistic recommendations for enhancements.
This final module allows you to apply your research skills to an organisation, destination or initiative of your choice and apply your project management and business research skills to evaluating and improving the initiative, grounded on your theoretical understanding of responsible tourism.
Gain an overview of the skills and expertise required to manage a successful ethical tourism enterprise. You will study the complexities of business management and be prepared for the commercial realities of the private, public or third sectors.
Developments in information communication technologies are causing seismic changes in how consumers behave in the marketplace. You will be introduced to a range of online platforms, tools and techniques that enable marketers to interact and engage with the consumer in the global marketplace. You will also have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of planning, executing, and monitoring small-scale online campaigns.
The most exciting part of my job is working with students to help them improve what they do. Most of our students are already very knowledgeable and experienced – we can refine that experience and give them the tools they need to critically analyse responsible tourism.

Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire. Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you.

Just because you aren't learning on campus doesn't mean you'll have to cope on your own - you'll have the support of a personal tutor along with the University's Student Hub and Wellbeing Centre. They are on hand to offer you advice about everything from academic issues to stress and anxiety.
Home to our first-rate sporting facilities – Headingley Campus has a rich and diverse history having played to visitors such as Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde. Set in 100 acres of parkland, with easy access to Leeds city centre, many of our buildings look out onto our grassy acre – a perfect place for hanging out, playing games and catching up with friends on long summer days. Headingley Campus has modern sport science laboratories, animation and music studios and the latest computing labs, as well as one of our libraries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors.
