About the Responsible Tourism Management Postgraduate course
The travel and tourism industry is more aware than ever of the need to adopt responsible business practices that improve the quality of life within local communities and conserve the environment and cultures of destinations. Marketing, operations and product development practices are changing across the sector and organisations need managers who have the ability to implement responsible tourism strategies.
You will explore domestic and international tourism understanding that responsible principles are as applicable to the Yorkshire Dales as they are to The Gambia. In addition to developing your subject knowledge, you will learn how to plan, implement and evaluate responsible tourism polices and practices. You will look at real issues and solutions and develop the management skills you need to operate effectively at a strategic level within government, non-governmental and private sectors.
We are also developing our course to increase our links to industry and are in the process of setting up partnerships with industry to link your modules more closely to real life examples. This course is also the only responsible tourism course in the world certified by the UNWTO TedQual programme. It is taught by staff with first-hand experience in tourism management, research and consultancy who will share their global expertise with you.
TEACHING AND LEARNING
This course is primarily delivered distance learning with some face-to-face teaching. The incorporation of distance learning is to enable you to continue working whilst undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate.
While most modules are delivered in a distance learning format, they do incorporate an optional weekend of traditional face-to-face contact. Although these teaching weekends are optional, we strongly recommend attending them if at all possible because of the obvious benefits you will receive.
For each distance learning module you will be sent an up-to-date manual of 150 to 200 pages which includes readings, tasks and links to further material.
A blend of assessment methods are used to practice and further develop your professional skills. Individual and small group assignments will be undertaken and performance evaluated through oral presentations, reports and essays.

Dr Davina Stanford Dr Davina StanfordSenior Lecturer
The most exciting part of my job is working with students to help them improve what they do. Most of our students are already very knowledgeable and experienced – we can refine that experience and give them the tools they need to critically analyse responsible tourism. Before joining our University, Davina worked for a tourism consultancy focussing on best practice in destination management. Her experience is broad and she has worked for a range of clients including local authorities, regional, national and international agencies, small businesses and local community groups. Davina studied her PhD in New Zealand and her current interests include responsible tourist behaviour and destination management.
