About the Sport & Exercise Science Postgraduate course

This course is designed to meet the professional standards set by industry governing organisations such as the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences. Your study will be centred on enhancing your awareness of the professional issues and research applications within health, exercise and sport, through opportunities to be involved in consultancy and research projects as well as work with elite-level athletes.
You will upgrade your knowledge of physiology, nutrition, biomechanics and psychology while gaining experience through an independent project related to your specific interests in sport and exercise science. You will also have the opportunity to apply for a range of exciting placement opportunities which will further refine your knowledge, enhance your skills and boost your CV. Previous students have secured placements with Leeds United, Yorkshire Carnegie, Leeds Rhinos and SportsAid, a UK charity helping the next generation of sports stars achieve their potential.

This module focuses on the design of research projects as a way of answering questions and solving 'real world' problems in a reliable and valid manner.
This modules aims to develop an understanding of how to apply research into a range of professional contexts associated with sport and exercise science.
This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to understand the major aspects of kinematics, kinetics and other biomechanical techniques such as electromyography. You will also become familiar with the use of biomechanical equipment and develop the ability to study motion by applying biomechanical principles to collected data.

This module aims to develop a comprehensive knowledge and critical understanding of the structure and function of the main human systems during exercise. It will also develop competence in laboratory data collection techniques, as well as the evaluation and interpretation of data.
This module aims to develop a good theoretical understanding of the current sport nutrition necessary to become a good sport and exercise practitioner. It introduces the general principles, concepts and underpinning theory in nutrition necessary for the development of nutrition strategies.

Louise Sutton Louise SuttonHead of SubjectLouise joined us in 2001, bringing with her a wealth of experience in teaching vocational awards in further education settings. Louise has been influential in establishing links between the University and the fitness industry and her research interests include the use of national occupational standards in higher education, physical activity promotion and the practical application of sports dietetics.
Our Library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year, providing you with access to specialist books and journals, learning spaces, computers, multimedia facilities and media equipment hire. Tens of thousands of our Library's digital resources, including ebooks, ejournals and databases, can be accessed online at a time and place to suit you.
