Sport Business

We offer two part-time options: on campus and distance learning. If you choose to study part-time at our Headingley Campus the length of study is two years. For distance learning you will study part-time for three years.

Overview

Sport is now big business - changing lives, shaping communities and impacting on economies all over the world.

You could already be working in sport and looking to progress to a more senior management role, or it could be you are motivated to seek a new and exciting career and are attracted by the options sport and commerce can provide in the UK and across the globe.

We will help you gain an understanding of the industry and the business principles that underpin it, helping you turn your passion into a rewarding career.

You will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience by working with industry partners in the Enterprise, Entrepreneurship & Sport module. This includes working on projects with key University partners such as Leeds Rhinos, Yorkshire Carnegie, Bradford Bulls amd Kirklees Active Leisure. Guest lectures will bring you into contact with cutting-edge practitioners and professionals in the sports industry, inspiring your learning, enhancing your networks and boosting your career prospects. The Professional Practice in Sport Business option module will provide you with the opportunity to gain further industry experience.

This course has been designed to introduce you to the key principles and processes of sports business management, with the opportunity to customise your study to your individual needs and career aspirations through making considered assessment choices and, also, through the negotiated focus of the Major Independent Study.

Our University has outstanding sports facilities at both the Headingley Campus and the world famous Headingley Carnegie Stadium, which is an international base for professional cricket, rugby league and rugby union teams. We enjoy fruitful partnerships with this famous sports arena, providing you with outstanding opportunities.

Entry Requirements

Requirements:Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; a template can be accessed at this link. English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Sport business organisations need to think and act strategically to succeed. Gain an insight into related aspects of the internal and external environment in order to formulate a holistic strategy for organisational development.

Study principles of economics and finance, using examples from the management of sports teams and clubs to illustrate economic issues and to give you an understanding of finance and funding for sports businesses.

Giving your learning a grounding in professional development, you will examine the theories and good practice surrounding HR and organisational development for managers operating in a sporting environment.

Stimulating an enquiring, analytical and creative approach to the study of sports marketing and PR this module aims to develop your critical understanding and awareness of contemporary sports marketing issues and practices.

Consider the area of enterprise and entrepreneurship with regards to business start-up, growth and sustained development, recognising the key role that strategy and finance play in achieving long-term success for sports businesses.

Undertake a major independent study into an area of your personal interest, relevant to your Sports Business course.

Dr Ian Richards
Senior Lecturer -
Ian has 20 years’ teaching experience in higher education. He also has a practitioner background in sports events management. His PhD was a unique study of the local economic impact of a Premier League football club. He has undertaken research and consultancy work for a number of national and international clients, including the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), UK Sport, the Ethiopian Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Egyptian ministries for sport, youth, labour and education, Sports Coach UK and for professional football, cricket and rugby union clubs. Ian is also an international technical official in athletics and was selected to officiate at the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships in London.

Fees & funding

Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most taught postgraduate modules have a credit point value of 20. The tuition fee for students entering in in 2018/19 on this course is £661 for each 20 credit point module. For modules with a different credit point value their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £33.05. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation.
