Overview

As governments and sporting bodies place greater focus on the benefits of lifelong physical activity and ensuring talented athletes fulfil their potential, the demand for highly qualified coaches has never been greater. Informed by expert coaches, this course will increase your skills and expertise and enhance your career as a professional sports coach.

With an active passion for coaching, you will focus on specific sports that interest you. Selecting from a range of option modules, you will be able to direct your learning towards your own practice and career goals.

Working with your course tutors and fellow student coaches on the course, you will draw on insights from contemporary practice and research to add depth to your existing knowledge and skills. Your refined expertise will improve your confidence, helping you to develop your professional judgement and decision making so you can plan, deliver and evaluate long-term coaching programmes that consider and prioritise the developmental needs of your participants. You will graduate with new insights about what coaching strategies work for you and your participants and why.

Research Excellence Framework 2014: 59% of our research submitted was assessed as world leading or internationally excellent.
As well as working with course staff with excellent research and industry experience there will be the opportunity to meet internationally renowned guest speakers, giving you a wider view on the industry, and the direction it is heading.

There will also be a range of volunteering opportunities open to you, both in the UK and internationally. With an established Research Centre for Sport Coaching & Physical Education, you'll be taught by top class coach experts who produce world renowned research on the topical issues of sports coaching.

Entry Requirements

Requirements:Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects of Sports Science, Sport Coaching, Sport Development, Physical Education or Qualified Teacher Status, at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject supported by evidence of an aptitude for the subject applied for, or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment.

English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.5 with no skills below 6.0, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.
Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Kevin Till is a Senior Lecturer and course leader in Sports Coaching. Kevin's research focuses on talent identification and development, specifically within rugby where he now co-leads the Carnegie Adolescent Rugby Research (CARR) project.

I have always had a passion for physical development within sport and I am now able to combine a variety of roles as a lecturer, researcher and coach to help our students and youth athletes achieve their potential.

Headingley Campus

Home to our first-rate sporting facilities – Headingley Campus has a rich and diverse history having played to visitors such as Winston Churchill and Oscar Wilde. Set in 100 acres of parkland, with easy access to Leeds city centre, many of our buildings look out onto our grassy acre – a perfect place for hanging out, playing games and catching up with friends on long summer days. Headingley Campus has modern sport science laboratories, animation and music studios and the latest computing labs, as well as one of our libraries, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
