Practising in the dynamic field of specialist sports care, you could find yourself working with elite athletes or have the opportunity to start your own sports therapy business.

You will study the theories which underpin the practical application of sports therapy. You will have access to the University's specialist resources and be able to draw on the considerable expertise of our sport and health academics to further hone your expertise.

You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and sharpen your practical skills on several placements. You could refine your expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of injuries working in a private practice, with the University?s sports teams or with elite-level athletes and professional sports clubs.

Accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists, upon completion of this course you will be able to apply for membership (insured) status of the society.

Our course team includes tutors who engage with elite Olympic and professional athletes, international sports teams as well as local and University teams. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to work across the expertise of two of our University's faculties and maximise the specialist facilities available for both therapy and sport.

You can study flexibly over one or two years, and our placement opportunities offer a wide variety of different experiences, with links to one national professional sports teams, as well as volunteering opportunities.

Studying a distance learning course offers the convenience and flexibility to make education work for you. Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Develop the core practical skills and underpinning theoretical knowledge required by sports therapists, which can then be applied safely to different levels of sports participants in sports settings.

Gain the advanced skills required to be a practising Sports Therapist. You will encounter both practical and theoretical elements of assessment, and physical and therapeutic modalities to enable a clinical and justified approach to practice.

Develop your understanding of different aspects of research design and the application to practice at Masters level. Critically evaluate both recent research publications and the current evidence-base for practice.

Gain experiential learning opportunities within a broad spectrum of sports therapy contexts, under the direct supervision of academic staff and industry professionals.

Produce a substantial research project on a self-selected topic of interest, demonstrating your developmental learning in addition to a variety of academic and practical skills.

Gain a detailed and critical understanding of the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing and exercise prescription in populations with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.

Be introduced to the general principles, concepts and underpinning theory in nutrition and biochemistry necessary for the development of performance nutrition strategies.

Understand the specific aspects of the structure and function of the neuromuscular system and their relationship with intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

Develop the clinical reasoning skills in the assessment of sports injuries and pathophysiology. Please note that if you study our part-time course, this module will be a core module.

Jodie has a clinical background in working within professional and semi-professional football, being part of the medical team and working pitch-side. Her educational background involved working with the education sector for the past 14 years. She combines both her clinical and education experience together allowing her to teach more effectively.
The MSc in Sports Therapy will give you assessment, treatment and management expertise along with exercise rehabilitation skills to manage all calibres of athlete - from amateur to professional. You will develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills which will help you develop a sound clinical and applied approach to the management of your patients.
