Overview

With urban areas expanding every day, sustainable development has never been more important. This course has been designed to help you tackle the housing, regeneration and management issues that face leading professionals in this field.

You will examine different interpretations of sustainable development, exploring neighbourhood planning and community engagement, providing you with the knowledge to plan and deliver your own programmes of urban management.

You will develop the leadership skills required to facilitate change, deliver local services and protect community assets. Our teaching team will use their industry experience to help you examine the theories behind leadership and management, explaining how they can be practically applied to social enterprise and public policy innovation.

Focusing on vocational training, our course enables you to engage with experienced members of the industry on client-based projects, enhancing your experience and expanding your network of contacts.

Research Excellence Framework 2014: our university's results for the Architecture, Built Environment and Planning unit, which it entered for the first time, were impressive with 37% of its research being rated world leading or internationally excellent.

Our course is great way to work towards a masters qualification without disrupting your career. Combining practical training with only three fixed study hours per week, you can fit the rest of your self-guided study around your working day.

Many of the teaching team have worked in the industry and provide you with real-life examples from the workplace to support your theoretical learning.

Like our students on campus, you will have the same excellent teaching and learning resources, however you’ll find these online instead of in a lecture theatre. Entry Requirements

Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subject of Housing, Health, Geography, Planning, Social Sciences or a professionally orientated subject of Teaching, Environmental Health or Community Work or similarly related subject; or at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject with knowledge of housing, or significant practical work experience of housing, planning, and community development, or professional practice relating to the built environment and neighbourhood well-being. Non-standard entry may require intervention by the Course Team; an interview or to write an essay. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; a template can be accessed at this link. IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Dr Quintin Bradley is a Senior Lecturer in Planning and Housing and leads research into community planning and its impact on housing supply. His work is published in peer reviewed international journals and he is the author of books on the tenants' movement and on localism and neighbourhood planning.

It is not every university that can offer you the chance to study in the best tall building in the world. But we can. Our City Campus is home to such award-winning learning environments as Broadcasting Place, voted best tall building in the world in 2010. Other buildings include the Rose Bowl, home to our Business School, which was awarded Best Commercial Property Development in the 2009 Yorkshire Property awards. Just over the road from the Rose Bowl is the Leslie Silver building which houses one of our impressive libraries across five floors. The library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the year.
