Overview

Develop the necessary skills and a comprehensive understanding of urban and rural planning from anywhere in the world to become an effective, professionally qualified planner.

Recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), this flexible, Joint Distance Learning Consortium (JDLC) course will focus on all stages of urban and rural planning, including urban design, plan making and policy, planning law and decision making, planning and place histories, the development process, finance, implementation and delivery and stakeholder participation and politics.

You will gain a critical awareness of the social, economic, political and regulatory nature of planning and will be able to evaluate development strategies and assess the challenges of planned interventions, sustainability and climate change.

During your final year, you will have the option to specialise in an area of personal interest through a selected Open University option module. You will also be encouraged to develop links with research via the RTPI conference series, through planning journals and other research seminars and professional practice conferences.

With more than 30 years’ experience in distance learning planning education, the MSc Urban & Rural Planning (JDCL) course brings together diverse expertise from four different universities around the UK, including industry professionals, to ensure you get the best in urban and rural planning education.

It will put you on the first step of the ladder to becoming a Chartered Planner and once you have completed the course taken together with a minimum of two years structured and mentored relevant experience, you will be able to apply to become of a member of the RTPI.

You are encouraged to take part in optional external trips, this will give you an understanding of how regeneration projects work on the ground, and how locations are used to conduct fieldwork and develop competence in practical research skills. You will have the opportunity to get involved in recent master-planning projects and carry out specific tasks, in groups or independently, such as field investigation and analysis and then be able to offer your own conclusions and recommendations.

You will also take part in online seminars and will be encouraged to present your own ideas for discussion by your peers and to reflect critically upon the issues exchanged and arising.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should meet one of the following criteria:

Graduates:

  • Have at least a second class honours degree in the cognate subjects such as Geography, Urban Studies, Architecture, Surveying, Environmental Science, Environmental Sustainably, or Housing and Real Estate Management
  • Have at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject plus at least one year of professional practice in Urban/Environmental Planning related work environment
  • Have at least a second class honours degree in a non-cognate subject plus one 60 credit Open University module (Environment: sharing a dynamic planet DST206)
  • Non-Graduates:

    • Non-graduates will normally be required to complete some study with the Open University before starting on the MSc. This will consist of up to 240 credits, depending upon your academic and professional background. Applicants with significant relevant experience from the work environment may be considered without formal qualifications.
    • You should describe your experience in detail in your application and provide relevant supporting documentation including your CV.
    • All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; a template can be accessed at this link.

IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Mature Applicants
Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu. If you wish to apply through this route you should refer to our University Recognition of Prior Learning policy that is available on our website. Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.

Dr Mohammad Radfar
Senior Lecturer
Graduating with a Master of Landscape Architecture and a PhD in Urban Design and Placemaking (scholarship), Mohammad gained extensive experience, knowledge and expertise in the research, design and development of urban places and public spaces. He has worked as a landscape architect, urban designer and environmental planner across the UK, include working in multidisciplinary teams on urban and environmental projects in the public and private sector. His research and teaching focus on cross-cultural experience of public places and he is interested in the process of placemaking across people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
This programme is fully recognised by the Royal Town Planning Institute and is the only course of its kind in the world. It has been running since 1985 and is suitable for students anywhere in the world who do not want, or are not able, to complete a part-time or full-time college-based course. The programme is very flexible and is guided by the principal educational philosophy of ‘access for all to a quality spatial planning education.”
